Seems some folks have a problem with it and I've asked what type of buds, etc. they might be using, but no one comes back and says.

Try another set of headphones or earbuds. I'm starting to feel the one for iPod don't work. I use Shure earbuds and Sennhieser HD650 headphones and all work fine.

Of course all of this assumes you're using the newest SBC firmware.

Good luck,

Howard

Should be working fine. There is a way to ssh in to the SBC and turn off the speaker, but I'm not sure that would help.

Anyone else have any ideas??

Hmm..how and where did you enable it to work as a player?

First you need to be running SC 7.3 and one of the related SBC firmware updates. Then on your SBC you go to Settings/Adavanced/Audio Playback and enable beta playback.

I found the connection pretty tight and had to really push the connector in until it was flush with the controller.

After that the sound came through the headphones. This is an awesome feature and I hope they manage to sort out the quirks!

Thank you Howard. But as the OP said, the sound is coming only from the controller and not from the headphones.

But be aware that not all music sources work with the SBC yet because the firmware for the SBC is still in beta. You can't get Rhapsody (but then again Rhapsody isn't working that well anyway) and a few other things. Pandora works like a charm and most Internet stations do. Of course your files should work fine.

It sounds great with headphones and you can run it through a set of powered speakers and be happy, but it may not be great through a higher quality two channel set up. I really need to test it again, but a while back when they first got it working, it didn't sound as good as other other SB's

Have a great weekend,

Howard

Yes, my files do really work fine, but I have problems with listening internet stations. I don't use Pandora, cause it doesn't work in Europe. So, is it possible to listen for example DI.FM? I'm playing with the settings right now, but until now, I didn't manage to make it work.

I'm not sure because, well heck, I don't even know what it is. Sometimes the radio stations are a little quirky. Do you know anything about Deezer? It's a new plug-in on 7.3 for you folks over in Europe. It's supposed to be on demand songs for free. You might check it out in your Settings/plugins. You may also want to ask your question in the SqueezeCenter forum. I'm sure someone there knows the answer.

I'm just getting playback out of the Controller speaker too. I tried it with 3 different headsets, Sennheiser HD-580, PX-100, and CX-300. I also tried a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter with the HD580 to see if it might be the connector. I believe I read in the release notes that plugging in the headphones should automatically change the player to the Controller, but that does not happen either. This was something I was really looking forward to so I'm disappointed that it does not work.

And again here. Sound out of the in-built speaker but not out of plugged in headphones. Have tried some earbuds that came with a Sony discman and Sennheiser HD201s. Apart from some crackling when the plug is inserted, I hear nothing from the headphone out. Does this mean there is a hardware fault with the controller?

I just founded out, that my Plantronics Pulsar BT (http://www.plantronics.com/north_america/en_US/products/mobile/bluetooth-headsets/pulsar590a) headphones are working too. Very nice.

I don't think it's faulty. Well, what I do is:
-Setting/Advanced/Audio Playback [enable]
-Choose Player/Controller/connect to server
-Server/Change player to your controller [for example-Living Room-your controllers name]

So, you can:
-simultaneously listen on your headphones radio stations/music files and on your amplifier other [different] radio stations. This is very good option, because when my wife listens her music with headphones, I can still enjoy listening my music on the amplifier.
-just listen on your headphones

As you wish.

What I discovered is, that when playing music on my controller, data is not sent to Last.FM. But, this function is still in beta,so...

Hi,

someone from the german forum had the same problem (playback through the builtin speaker and nothing from the headphone port) and it was "solved" after he has rebooted the SBC once - after applying all required settings, i.e audio-playback enabled.

kind regards,
Markus

The controller player seems to work OK. However, as there are no tone controls the sound is a little bland and tinny. I know its only in beta at the moment so can I kindly suggest that some sort of software tone control is added for the controller player as development progresses. If it gets this then its the best gadget out there.

Thanks Markus. I had tried rebooting the controller to no effect. I did a complete hardware reset of the controller and on enabling audio on the controller, the headphone output now works. Listened on my HD201's and it sounded pretty good! But I then unplugged the headphones and on plugging them back in again, no sound from the headphones (but there is sound from the controller). I tried another controller hardware reset but this time the headphone output refuses to work. There appears to be some sequence you have to follow to get the headphone out working but I have not managed to work it out.

Judging from some other posts, I'm beginning to think there may be an issue with the jack. Mine always works, but isn't quite square in its mounting. I've seen where others have had to plug and unplug them to get them to work. I guess it's also possible that the jacks have some oxidation since they have basically been unused since manufacture.

You may try cleaning the jack to see if that helps.

Well I tried plugging/unplugging the headphones, twisting the jack when inserted a number of times and it started to work again. It seemed to switch between the inbuilt speaker and headphones when they were plugged in. Problem fixed I thought, but then it failed again after unplugging and plugging the headphones. It is the intermittency that is frustrating me.

Sounds as if I might be on to something. You should call support and see either about a repair or replacement. One thing you could try before calling support is cleaning the jack. There's very little voltage going through one of those jacks so any oxidation at all can cause an issue. Generally with musical instruments it't the ground that oxidizes the worst. If you can find something about the size of the jack you can either use a contact cleaner or even alcohol. I'm thinking the shaft of a q-tip might fit pretty well. Soak it in cleaner or alcohol and gently run it in and out of the jack. Two things you're looking for. One try to really clean the sides of the inside of the jack and second as you go in and out you should feel the connection that contacts the tip of the jack. There are two, but I don't know if you'll be able to actually feel it well enough to tell. Anyway, try and get them clean also. Try not to go any further in than that. You may be able to see some dark stains on the q-tip after cleaning. If you do, it's a good sign that it was fairly dirty.

If this doesn't help it's time to have the jack replaced. Good luck

Thanks for the advice Howard. I tried as you suggested, there was no evidence of any dirt being present. The same symptoms as before though. Enable controller audio and select music on the controller. Music being heard through speaker. Insert headphones and music is played through them and the speaker muted. Unplug them and music played through the speaker. Plug headphones in again and music continues to be played through the speaker and not through headphoness. Is anyone else experiencing similar problems?

If it was a hardware failure, I would expect it to fail consistently but I guess that it is time to call support and see what they have to say.

Maybe try one more thing.. A different set of head phones or earbuds. The device for switching the output from speaker to headphones isn't mechanical. It may be based on seeing a certain impedence on the output. We know some earbuds don;t work so maybe try a set of headphones.

I think it senses a load on the output and switches off the speaker. Maybe little ear buds don't present enough of a load. Maybe one of the Logitech guys will fill us in.

See this pdf for the operation of the Wolfson WM8750 DAC. It tells everything you may want to know about the headphone output right in the second paragraph..

Sorry, I couldn't copy the text. BTW, it appears I was wrong and it is triggered by a mechanical switch.
