View Full Version : Play my music over the net

I have SC installed on my Windows HomeServer together with my Music library in the Music share.
Can I play that music over the net, and if so how?
I've openned port 9000 on my router and can open SC remotely, but the only connected devices it recognises are the physical players in my house. So I really need it to stream my music library to the remote machine I logged in from.
Can this be done?
Cheers
Hyde.
This should cover it, or at least provide a good starting point:

Thanks for the pointer. I'll give that a more thorough read tonight.
My fear is that my music library is entirely FLAC. I was hoping that maybe Vista WMP11 could be passed a url for either the individual track or better still a playlist. Maybe I'll find that solution from your link.

Hamachi (LogMeIn)
Moose
Squeezeslave
Hamachi on server and client.
Moose and Squeezeslave on client
Point out Squeeslave in Moose and start Moose with path\moose.exe /squeezeslave.

Sorry, I should have said before. I'd like to achieve this without installing any additional software than might be found on a basic Windows machine with internet access.
I'd like to play the music either at work over headphones (where I can't install any additional software), or using RealPlayer on my Nokia N95 mobile phone.
Cheers
Hyde.
I've not used RealPlayer, so I don't know if it will play a URL. Microsoft Media Player will.
Regaring sending FLAC over the 'net - once you connect to slim server over the 'net, a player will be created in the server. You can modify its settings to bitrate limit with mp3. You will have to have the LAME binary installed on the server for this to work.
Too bad you can't run squeezeslave on the client side - it works really well and makes things easier since you control playback from only one place - the web UI of squeezecenter.

Thanks
Also found this thread which has me very nearly where I want to be. Just need to check my LAME installation as I'm getting errors that this isn't installed.

Ah didn't have LAME installed at all!
All now working on my N95 at least :)) Just need to establish why I can't connect at work. I just get timeouts which I have a hunch is down to port 9000 being blocked perhaps?

Can you run Softsqueeze as an applet? This works for me with Slimserver 6.5.4 (I can't install software either at work), but with Squeezecenter 7.2 the Softsqueeze as an applet won't load for some reason.
Also, for Softsqueeze you need port 9000 and 3483 open on the end that is hosting the music.

Nope can't get SC as an applet to run on the N95 :(
Could Squeezeslave be run from a flash drive?

Well as far as the N95 is concerned the solution I have is fine, and I doubt installing anything on an SD card would work.
Just trying out a similar routine to that of the N95 with my browser and Vista WMP11 on my laptop as if it were accessing my system externally. Just can't get it to work.
So in WMP I send the stream.mp3 command and then open SC in my browser and try and play something. Although SC recognises a Mozilla player I can't get SC to keep that player selected :-?? SC keeps flipping back to a classic on my home system.
Assuming you have a recent version of Java installed (which you would need anyway to run the applet) you should be able to run the webstart version of Softsqueeze (i.e. click the launch link in SC7). It doesn't really install anything, it just throws the jars in a local cache. We have super locked down machines at work but Webstart still works.

I just read in a number of places that whilst the N95 OS supports java applications, the built in browser doesn't support java. Which probably explains why those links from the SoftSqueeze page don't actually do anything when clicked :(
I've also lost my ability to hear anything on the N95 again today. Nokia Internet Radio buffers the mp3 stream and I can connect to SC handheld and activate playlists, but no sound :-??
To clarify, I was talking about the original question re: running Softsqueeze on locked-down PCs. I certainly wouldn't expect webstart (or applets to be honest) to work on an N95 :)

Ah sorry, didn't realise.
I can't even link to SC from work let alone change any settings. I think we're blocking port 9000. Is it possible to to have my router set to receive requests on something like http://server:1000 and convert that into http://server:9000 where port 1000 might be allowed at work but I can keep everything as standard at home on 9000 still? If the router can do this but needs to know the IP address I'd be coming from then that too would blow me out the water.
Depends on the router, but potentially yes. The problem you'll have is getting playback once the SC page is loaded. You can try an SSH tunnel on port 443 (usually open for https) but even that doesn't work at my office. The other thing to consider is whether it's worth it - the networks are setup that way for a reason and to be honest getting SC working isn't worth getting fired for :)

I agree.
The solution I came up with was to buy a small host machine that serves the music directly to my headphones, bypassing the internet. I belive they're called mp3 players ;)
If you run a webserver on your WHS or any other server, have a look at this: http://musicbrowser.sourceforge.net/
It plays your music via just a simple webbrowser.
I use SSH on softsqueeze in the office, works nicely through firewalls,if it is enabled on your SC.

I got embroiled in the 'does this work' rather than the 'do I need' approach. My N95 is working again following a reboot of the phone, so I assume it got its knickers in a twist about something. So now it's streaming at 96kbps which sounds fine over the supplied ear phones and I can only listen for short periods before having to engage with reality again ;-)

Any idea where there is a good tutorial about getting SSH set up on Win 7?
