View Full Version : Receiver bridged mode networking
Hi,
I'm currently using two receivers, one controller, a Linux server (Squeezecenter 7.2.1) and one wireless access point. The receivers are both hard wired, as is the server.
I'm getting various issues with the wireless range as the access point isn't well positioned for the room that the second receiver is in.
So, what I was wondering is whether bridged mode might be better and use the receivers as access points for the controller. Question is, will a controller use two receivers and switch between each one seamlessly as the controller moves from one room to another or will it only ever use one?
Any help here would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
If I put a Boom in a third room, will the controller also use that as a bridge?
The controller (and other devices) do not curerntly support wireless roaming. There is an open "bug" for this that is supposed to be addressed with release 7.3. I have a wireless range expander, and from what I can tell the controller grabs the stonger signal when it is turned on, and holds onto it until it loses that signal completely. The preferred method of operation would be that it scan for a stronger signal in the background and switch (seamlessly) when one becomes available.
I'm looking forward to this feature.

I kinda guessed that was the answer from previous enquiries regarding wireless roaming. Didn't know if it was any different when the receivers were in bridged mode but I guess not.
Thanks.

No, only the SBR can act as an AP to the controller.

I was hoping the same thing when I got my Duet. I use a second router upstairs and it's very easy to switch from one to the other when roaming around the house.

Hi
I've a similar problem:
two receiver in bridget network mode in different rooms, one controller connects wireless via receiver, no wireless access point. SqueezeCenter 7.3.1. Everything is working fine as long as I stay connected to the first installed receiver. But when I move to the other room with the second receiver, the wireless signals goes very bad, because the controller always connects to the first receiver, it doesn't make a roaming to the closer receiver with the strong wireless signal.
Is there a way to switch it manually WITHOUT doing a factory reset!
This bug should be fixed as soon as possible. Otherways the multiroom concept with more than one receiver makes no sense!
DEVELOPERS: please have a look to this issue!

Try going to advanced settings->wireless network and select the network you want. In my experience, if you just want to get the best AP of a multi-AP network, opening the wireless network page does the trick. Your network will still be selected in the list, but the AP will have changed to the best.
In your case, if I understand, you actually want to switch networks from the bridged mode receiver to your wireless AP. I doubt roaming will ever do that automatically, but I'm not really knowledgeable about the implementation. It would be better if you could always have the controller talk to your wireless network, I think. I assume the location of the wired receiver doesn't get good signal from your wireless AP. Since it has a wire, an alternative would be to install an AP next to the receiver to extend the wireless network. Of course, you'd still have to "help" the controller roam until they fix roaming.
