View Full Version : Genre list

Does anyone know how to edit the genre list that's displayed on the controller? At first I thought it was composed solely of data it had extracted from the tags in my music, now I'm not so sure.

I "zeroed-out" all my genre tags (I use Tag&Rename), and then retagged a portion of my files with a total of 6 discrete tags. I then did a complete rescan of my music library. The genre list on the controller then showed me a huge number of tags, yet only the six were pre-selected -- that is -- the box to the right of them on the display was selected when I chose Random Mix -> Choose genres.

I suppose that it is possible that I somehow screwed up the clearing of the genre field on my files, and while I await responses to this thread, I'll double check that. I say this because it seems logical that the genre list would be generated from my library rather than from some "Industry Standard" list that was hardwired into the controller or SC. One never knows with computers however.

I may be missing something glaringly obvious here, but how do I make the controller's genre list reflect only what my music is tagged with? I'd really like to reduce the noise.

I did search the forums for this issue, but came up empty handed. Thanks in advance for any help

If you didn't already, I would try a clear library and rescan, and if that doesn't work deleting the cache files here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezeCenterDefaultLocations

Great username btw :-) Neat or on the rocks?

Your advice would indicate to me that the genre list is coming from my music library. That doesn't surprise me. I did do a clear and rescan, but did not forcbily remove the cache. Today I'm going to double check the genre tags on my music and try your suggestions. Hopefully it solves the problem! Thanks Skunk.

Neat or on the rocks? Depends on my mood. For the most part neat. If the bourbon is quality, it's always neat. Budget bourbons like JB white or Evan Williams Black label get the rocks. No logical reason for that, it's just how I prefer it. Spell out my username in english and add a .com to it, and you'll see my website.

Just to be clear, there is no "industry standard" list of tags stored is SC. You could tag all tracks with moods, instead of genres, and SC would be perfectly happy. You can also have multiple tags, and unfortunately hidden tags or multiple tag types (that may not show up automatically in your tagging app). If you're using Mp3 then you should only have Id3v2, and make sure to delete any Id3v1 or other extraneous tags. If using FLAC, you should make sure there are no Id3 tags and only VORBIS comments.

I'm not familiar with Tag and Rename, but with Mp3Tag there is a pref panel for tag types that will be read from files. It's possible Tag&Rename is missing APE tags or not listing all Id3 types, so it might be worth taking a look at the free Mp3Tag app if your latest efforts are in vain.

I'll put ice in some great ones too. E.g. Stagg neat is a little much for me, but I can deal with $15/bottle Rittenhouse Rye 100pr BIB neat. Should've never visited the site not having a bottle on hand!

Thanks Skunk. When I said "Industry Standard", what I meant was that perhaps SC had a genre list hardwired into it, ostensibly for user convenience. As it turns out however, I hosed the genre tag clear operation, so what I was seeing was indeed coming from my collection. I've been rectifying that all evening. Thanks for the flac tag info.

Stagg can be handled straight in very small sips, but anything above -- say 105 proof -- will fry my taste buds almost immediately if I don't add water.

All this digital music talk is making me thirsty!
