View Full Version : Artist composer problem
In squeeze center if I navigate to the following:
Music Library > Artists > Chris Cornell....
I get 2 albums listed:
Carry On
Euphoria Morning
If I hit the all songs button, it starts playing "Badmotorfinger" album by Soundgarden, Chris Cornell is tagged as one of the composers. This is unexpected behaviour, how can I stop it happening? I expected it to start playing the album "Carry On" followed by "Euphoria Morning". I didn't recall it happening until I upgraded squeezecenter to the latest version recently but cannot be certain.
uncheck "include composers in artist list" in library settings.
uncheck "include composers in artist list" in library settings.
do you mean the composers checkbox at the top of the "behavior" page?
"COMPOSER, BAND AND ORCHESTRA IN ARTISTS
Song information about composers, bands and orchestras can be included in the artists list for browsing and search."
If so, all those 3 checkboxes there are unticked and never have been ticked.
I'm gonna chime in here as well as this problem has been bothering me for years now.
The options page has this setup and has had some variant of this for a very long time:
---------------------------------------
Composer, Band and Orchestra in Artists
Song information about composers, bands and orchestras can be included in the artists list for browsing and search.
O Composer
O Conductor
O Band/Orchestra
---------------------------------------
I have never had any of these options turned on and "off" seems to be the default.
However, since I have been using slimserver/squeezecenter this option has never functioned for me, as anything in the Composer tag is ALWAYS treated like an Artists tag and added to the Artist list regardless of whether the "include composers" option is on or off. Very annoying. Seriously, it's been several years now.
I barked about this long ago but was only told to make sure the "include composers" option was turned off at which point I let out a heavy sigh, rolled my eyes, became exasperated, and gave up.

Ok, I hope this also doesn't make your eyes roll. Are you sure that none of the composers is listed as an artist somewhere else within your library?

For example, when I choose, in Artists, John Fogerty, I also see a Dave Edmonds CD which happens to have a song, Almost Saturday Night, which has John Fogerty listed as the composer.
I don't have any of those checkboxes you list above checked either. Sure I could go through my collection and remove all composers, but it seems the software should work as designed, no?

Its a moot question and I'll explain why...and yes my computer is plugged in and no I am not using my mouse as a foot pedal.
Let's use the single "easy" by Faith No More as an example. This is FNM's cover of the Lionel Richie song. The first track displays thus in the web interface:
Artist: Faith No More
Band/Orchestra: Faith No More
Composer: Lionel Richie
Album: Songs To Make Love To
If I have no other Lionel Ritchie albums in my library, this album, as tagged creates a Lionel Richie heading with one album (this one) under it.
The fact of the matter is I do, in fact, for posterity, and due to the fact that I am old, have one Lionel Richie album in my Library. "Cant Slow Down" to be precise. When I select Lionel Richie from my Library I see two albums listed, both "Cant Slow Down" and "Songs To Make Love To" the FNM single.
So regardless of whether I have a composer also listed as an artist elsewhere in my library that single should show up under Faith No More, and ONLY under Faith No More, unless I had the "include composers" option toggled on, which I do not, will not, and never have.

Ok, as I'm understanding all this there are two kind of issues with which we are dealing here.
1)Artist/composer check box. It means simply to include the guy who is a composer in a track in your library into the list of guys who are artists on tracks in your library when browsing by artist. That implies that if a guy is both composer and artist on different track, he will appear in artist list regardless of the check box. Now, combine it with the possibility that the album where the guy is composer might be a compilation and that opens up some interesting combination with the other check box - show all artist for the album.
2) once you click on a guy in the artist list, then you are taken to all his works. In other words, SC doesn't differentiate among the roles, artist or composer or conductor or band (with one notable exception). That might be a bug or a feature, depending on how you look at it, but right now, it has nothing to do with the check box from the prior point.

Do you mean Lionel Ritchie is listed in the list of artists within Browse Artists, if he only appears in your library as a composer, and the composers checkbox is unticked?

This is working as intended, and I like it that way.
The Composers checkbox only controls whether composers appear within Browse Artists list.
When you browse albums for a chosen artist, SC always displays all music by that artist, including albums that the artist appears as a guest, conductor, composer or band/orchestra.
