View Full Version : Best remote to use with boom? And more...

I *love* my Boom, I think it's great. It also has lots of nice touches, like the magnetic holder for the remote. But, I find the remote a bit limiting (inevitably due to its size). For example:
- I can't quickly just to an artist. I have three SB3 players and I can press 7 to jump to P, 6 to jumpt M etc. I have 662 artists, so that's a heck of a lot of scrolling on the Boom remote.
- the Boom has preset buttons (1-6) but the remote does not
- The SB3 remotes have Favourites and Repeat buttons etc.
So, I have three SB3 players and one Boom, but only two SB3 remotes and a Boom remte which I don't get on with the remote. What is my best option? I can't seem to get a replacement (or extra) SB3 remote since I'm in the UK and the "Slim online shop" is USA only. So should I buy a batch of four remotes of a different brand/style and if so which ones should I get? Which remote will give me all the functionality of the SB3 remote - and possible more - but also work with the Boom?
Many thanks for all advice/suggestions.
Jim

Ripcaster.co.uk sells them - only listed under "all products".

No remote control suggestion, but i use the custombrowse plugin. With htis plugin you can create a menu item which sorts artists by letter. This reduces scrolling quite a bit. Suppose you search Pink Floyd, it's only 10 items to the P and then through your artists starting with a P (either scrolling up or down)

Which remote is best depends upon how you use your Boom.
If, like me, you use the Boom as a bedside clock/alarm/radio/hifi and can always see the display when you use it a normal SlimDevices remote would be best. Make sure it is a backlit one if you use the Boom in the dark.
If you can't always see the display when you want to use the device consider the Controller, which will give you the added benefits of a nice colour screen and being able to control all the other devices, although scrolling is still not optimum. You may also take a hit on reliability when compared with the more bullet-proof remote.
Custom Browse plugin sounds like a good idea as long as your only problem is with long lists. Unfortunately it will not work for me as I find the Boom remote far too small to hold and use in my hand. In addition the buttons seem to have been placed in the worst possible positions, with the most frequently used ones at the bottom of the remote where it is quite difficult to for your fingers to get to them without juggling the position of the remote around in your hand first.
I know nothing about third party remotes.

Nice one, I've just placed an order!
On the basis that I like my SB3 remotes, and I already have two, it probably makes sense to have consistency.
Thanks all.

I see Jim already found a solution, but I wanted to add that the Logitech Harmony remotes work great with Squeezeboxes (except the SBR, since it has no IR).

I'd love to get the Harmony remotes...but I'd want one for each room, and for that price I could pay the neighbour's kids to change channels for me :-)

No doubt! But they really are best for areas where you have a lot of AV components that require switching. For me, that is only in one room.
The best "remote" is the Squeezebox Controller. I use it to control my 2 Booms and Transporter at home.
