View Full Version : Boom instruction manual incomplete??
I'm reading the DL'd Boom manual in preparation for my Boom's arrival.
On page 11 the manual states "...If you already have an account, instructions for adding your new Squeezebox Boom to your account can be found later in this guide....." which is great and exactly what I need as I already have an SB3 and SN account.
Problem is I cannot see where there are any further set up instructions for existing accounts later in this guide? Or am I overlooking something?
p.s. FYI: Minor spelling correction needed on page 33. "My music sound choppy, distorted, or skips". I'm no Harvard grad but I'd guess "sound" should be plural. :) I'm a horrible speller myself (thank god for Spell Check) but you may want to correct this before you print another 10,000 copies of the User Manual. :)

I think all you really need to do is log into your SN account online after you get your Boom setup and see if its there. If not, just add it like you would any other NMP.
Somebody will probably go into the PDF and correct the spelling errors. No worry on the manual as I believe the Boom only comes with a Quick Start Guide and directions to the Net to DL a manual. I was in the Beta so I don't know for sure how a Retail Boom arrives, but the trend is toward not printing manuals anymore. It saves money, saves trees, and can be instantly updated using online PDF instead.
I just set up my new Boom and it's really simple to add the Boom to your SN account.
You will need to have the Boom's Identification Number, which will be displayed on the Boom the first time you try to access SN, from the Boom. Then just log on to SN and add the new player. That's all it takes!

Thanks iPhone & KJAM. I'd hoped it was that simple, just seems rather odd this was omitted from the manual especially after the manual says "it will be covered later" but is not.
This will be my first attempt at utilizing wireless for a SD product (fingers crossed). I'm assuming the WPA2 Key must be entered by the remote? No way to enter this (i.e. cut & paste) into SC or any such application? Would be nice to temporarily hard wire these devices, get SN & SC to recognize the player, then have a SC7 portion for wireless (per player) to type in or cut & paste wireless info like SSID & WEP/WPA, and vise-versa to cut & paste MAC address into the router, etc...
Hopefully the SB3 remote will be recognized by the Boom so I can at least use the number/numeric keys if restricted to WEP/WPA entry by remote. :)

It's faster using the knob and front panel buttons.

Boom isn't connected to SC at the time, so there's no way to get this data to Boom.

Neat but pretty advanced!

Yes, all previous SB remotes work fine with Boom.

Thanks Mark. As usual you know your STUFF and explain it in a way us computer morons can understand.
Stay tuned........as I may have more questions connecting the Boom via my Hayes 1200 Baud modem and my Commadore 64. :)

LOL, thanks! <blush>

Err, won't work. ;-) Using LAME to transcode down to MP3 at such a low bitrate would reduce the music to about 5 or 6 tones...(kidding, MP3 won't go that low!)

HA! :)
BTW: Will SC7 fit on my 8" floppy??

Sure. Burn a copy onto a CDR (or put it on a memory stick). Place it on the floppy... Plenty of room for lots of other things as well... :)
Just as all here have assured me (thanks again to all) the Boom setup was much simpler than anticipated! In 10 minutes the Boom was setup, mounted and running!
Once connected via WiFi to my home network it AUTOMATICALLY connected to and registered itself onto my SC7 (obviously SC 7 was running). Then, as if that wasn't simple enough, I selected "Connect to SqueezeNetwork" from the Boom's menu and yet again it AUTOMATICALLY connected and registered itself onto SN.
I had assumed I'd have to go into SC and SN to add the Boom (which was expected, not a complaint) but nope, it just did it on it's own.
Obviously this install was made a bit simpler than installing the Boom as my very first SD device due to my already having a registered SB3 and SN account.
Two small tips from a techno-moron (me) if connecting to WiFi with WEP/WPA encryption:
1. I used the SB3 remote to utilize the numeric and alpha buttons to enter the WPA key, just goes quicker than using the Boom remote.
2. Being the love child of Charley Brown and Ziggy I always manage to screw up the simplest of computer tasks. This time I somehow entered a blank space at the end of my WPA key.
I was able to use the + and > buttons on the remote to remove the blank space.
