View Full Version : Preset buttons won't work

Just got my Boom - very neat, but I can't get the presets to work. The .pdf manual says the preset buttons work just like a car radio: Whatever is currently playing, press and hold the preset button and then the station (I'm saving stations) is assigned to that button. Unfortunately, I've been pressing and holding like crazy, and it doesn't lock in the station.

Any suggestions? Am I missing something obvious here?

Could this be the problem?

You can also use the web interface's Favorites management. Set hot keys #1 to 6 and these will correspond with the six buttons on the front of the Boom.

All your other buttons work, right?

Yes, all the buttons work. After some further fiddling I can report that the preset buttons work too; they just don't work like I expected them to (I guess I took the car radio analogy a little too literally). I can't press and hold a preset button to lock in a radio station feed that I'm currently listening to, but if I order the stations I want as the first six items on my 'favorites' list, then the buttons will call up those stations.

Thanks for the help, guys. I'll keep experimenting.

Hmm - you should be able to treat them just like you think you should - Just last night, I pressed and held a preset button to assign my Last.fm recommendations station to that preset - worked like a charm, although I either missed whatever confirmation there was that the assignment went through, or there wasn't one.

So maybe it's working and you're missing the confirmation? I tested by turning my Boom off and then pressing the preset. (BTW - I love that this powers on the Boom and plays the preset all at once.)

I didn't know that. Pretty handy. I do kinda wish all the buttons were on the top of the unit. I think it would make them easier to press without moving the Boom.

Do you mean you have to move your Boom to access the buttons or do you mean your Boom moves when you press the buttons?

I found neither of these happened. Boom's front face is angled backwards so that the controls are accessible and it provides resistance against sliding back as you push the buttons. Boom's weight and sticky feet also prevented it sliding back.

If the buttons were on the top of the unit, it would be impossible to use as an alarm clock - for me, at least, because Boom is at the same height as my head when I'm lying down.

I had the same experience. From my experiments, you can't just be listening to a song and press & hold the preset from anywhere in the menu structure. It seems you can only set a preset for the current song/stream when you are on the Now Playing track information screen, otherwise nothing happens at all (no confirmation) and the log says "Error: No valid url found, not adding favorite!" I filed a bug (9417), but it is probably a duplicate of 8503..

I guess my expectation is that if you hit a preset while a song/internet station is playing, it should just make that a preset. But I can see the other argument that if you are navigating to something and then hit a preset, that it would bookmark it. Maybe the correct behavior would be to say that if you are navigating to something (album/artist/song/playlist/stream), then bookmark that, otherwise, just bookmark the currently playing song/stream?

P.S. Here's an odd one. While playing around with this, I discovered that I can create a favorite from the Beatles album called 1 (i.e, album tag is just the single digit, one). But it won't play back from the preset or the SC favorites list -- I get an empty playlist and it says the associated URL is db:album.titlesearch=?

From my experiments, you can't just be listening to a song and press & hold the preset from anywhere in the menu structure.

Intersting point - Whenever I fire up my last.fm recommendations radio, I then work back through the menus to the "Now Playing" screen so I can see what it is I'm being recommended. The smart thing to do would be to change my screensaver to Now Playing, instead of the little analog VU, but I love that thing!

So, I can confirm, I was at the "Now Playing" screen when I favorited. YMMV.

This is the only way I can get mine to work, ie order them in the Favorites on SqueezeNetwork. If in "Now Playing" I can hold a preset and nothing changes for that preset.

Are these truly "hot keys"? i.e. They can be set to point to any SC menu item? Like I could have Boom button #1 bring me to any particular folder in SC7 Favorites?
Not just presets to point to a particular URL stream?

Thanks :)

I tried this method as well as the now playing method and I could not get it to reassign my preset 1 to the new selection. Something is not working right because I cannot reprogram the preset buttons with ease.

Bump.

I'm still having trouble with my preset buttons. The customer service guys are still working on it, but apparently haven't yet been able to duplicate the problem. Briefly: The only way my preset buttons will work is to call up my first six 'favorites' in SqueezeCenter. Pressing and holding a button to set a song or radio station does nothing.

Is anyone else still having this problem? If so, did you find a solution?

Mine does the same....so I just set them as you via the SqueezeNetwork Favorites and that works fine.

Test: All presets have been setup using my Favorites in SN, 1-6. I selected an Internet station not in my Favorites nor a preset; I waited until it was "now playing"; I then pressed preset #1 for about 4 or 5 seconds; I then selected preset #1 and the old preset station was still active. I checked my Favorites and they were the same. Did I do something wrong to set the station as a preset?

I think being able to add a Folder (music library, manual playlist, favorites folder) to each of the six presets would be handy as well. :)

Just received my boom and have same problem as above.
Has anyone a fix for this yet?

You'll like it less when you turn on the Boom in the middle of the night with a sleeping partner next to you without having remembered to select headphones!
