View Full Version : Alarming alarm question. I am gonna be embarrassed.

O.K. be kind. I set my alarm for the first time last night and it seemed as easy as one would expect. However (and here's the embarrassing part) when it went off this morning, I had no idea how to turn it off. I could hit snooze, but it just went off again in 9 minutes. How the heck do you just turn it off without turning it off in the settings? Told you it was bad.

Second issue that's not as critical as the first, but darn near cost me my life this morning. My alarm is set for 3:30 a.m. and I woke earlier than the alarm this morning so I watched as 3:30, 3:31 and 3:32 rolled by. The alarm icon was blinking, but no sound. I have it set up to use one of my favorites from SC. The song doesn't have a long lead in or anything, but there was no sound after 3 minutes. I decided to get up and go shower. Apparently, after I left it went off and not knowing how loud is loud when I set the alarm, apparently 30 is pretty darn loud. My wife awoke to the Beatles "Good Morning" with rooster and assorted barnyard animals screaming at her. Not good.

I have it set to "fade in", but I wouldn't think 3 minutes would pass without a decernable sound. Any ideas what caused it?

I need to go home tonight and experiment with the alarm a bit. Volume settings, etc., but if someone could answer the first question foremost and the second question if you knwo it, I will be greatful.

:-)

No, you're not the only one. I didn't know how to do it either :-) Power
button or pause button will shut off the alarm. I suggested we flash up a
message, but the consensus was that people already know how to stop the
music. I'm still not so certain it's clear.

You have to get up *really really* early in the morning to fool you.

Sorry, I don't have any more useful information :-) Max the alarm master
should be able to help.

Max (who did a lot of the alarm code) has answered this question in more detail here (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=335083&postcount=2) which you may find helpful.

Press the power button.

I do believe you, but that leads me to another question. I did push the power button, but after the snooze button. I guess I have to wait until the snooze times out before I can cancel the alarm? I think I need to do it
when I'm more awake than I was :-)

In my experience, this can be caused by SC failing to find and play the playlist or favourite that the alarm is set to, so it defaults back to random tracks, but hasn't happened to me since the early part of the beta testing, so not sure if it still works that way. What was the alarm set to play?

I never tested that - sounds like a reasonable enhancement request to me - please file it.

Maybe my wife will let me sleep in the bedroom tonight :-) She already thinks I'm spending too much time with my Boom...

Your wife thinks you spend too much time with Boom? You should talk to
mine!

What was the alarm set to play?

It was set up to play a favorite that I created with just one song in it from my files, "Good Morning" by the Beatles.

Let me be sure by trying to duplicate it tonight when I am far more aware :-) If I am correct I'll file it.

Thanks

As long as the two of them can't get together, we'll probably be o.k.. We must not allow them to organize :-)

If it played the right song, then I don't think that can be the issue. There may be something in the server.log at 3:30am which will tell you why it didn't go off straight away.

I'd log a bug if I were you.

For a reason yet to be determined, my Boom always fails at playing a Random Song mix (even though Random Song works perfectly when selected). This resulted in a ~20 second pause before the alarm played and initially, no fade-in (which is now fixed).

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9330

Since the failure of a stream to play results in selecting 10 items at random, I never knew until I checked the logs.

However it shouldn't take 3 minutes, particularly when trying to play a track which it eventually can play.

All I can say is it's a good thing I'm not a pilot. Both issues were either operator error or a dream. Everything works fine when I try to recreate the problem. For now I'm gonna see what happens tomorrow and not say a peep until tommorrow evening.

What a dork.....

How do you go about submitting an enhancement request such as this?

Create an account at http://bugs.slimdevices.com and click New to open a new bug report. There is a place in the form to mark it as an enhancement request. If you don't know what to put for all the fields, just do the ones you know or make a guess. It will be reviewed by staff later anyway.

Will pushing and holding the snooze button cancel the alarm? My current alarm clock this is the case (Nakamamichi SS3) and I believe the Sony I had before that this was the case as well too. If not this would be a nice enhancement.

I also have a delay since upgrading to 7.2 and setting the fade option. I'll try turning off the fade to see if it cures it.

Also, i'm a bit confused about the rendom mix when i get woken up. Before the upgrade it just used to be the normal random mix. Now i get a random playlist containing 10 songs. I realise 10 songs is pleanty to wake me up, but somtimes i like to skip a few and have a bit of a boogie in bed before going to work.

<edit> oops, sorry i've just realised this is in the boom forum and i have a sb3, but i'm sure the above behaviours are relavant?

Pressing power during a snooze should definitely stop the alarm and the snooze.

I'm afraid that using Random Mix with the alarm is broken in the 7.2 release due to the server's underlying protocol handler. There's a bug open against this that will hopefully be fixed for 7.2.1. This same bug may also affect other favourites as alarm sounds.

Random mix as an alarm sound is unfortunately broken in 7.2 due to a bug in squeezecenter's underlying protocol handler. There's a bug open against this.

The alarm clock checks after 20 seconds to see if music is actually playing. If not, it picks 10 tracks at random and plays them (note that this isn't the same as random mix). What you are seeing is this fall-back behaviour which is kicking in due to the random mix failing. In 7.2, a fade-in does not occur when the fallback triggers, which is another (unintentional) way of spotting the problem. In 7.2.1 the fallback sound will fade in as well.

But don't forget to first of all check that your bug hasn't already been filed! It's worth spending a while searching the existing bug reports if you can.

Is that all the random mixes? I have an alarm set to Album Mix with an alarm timeout of 60 minutes. It makes a playlist of ten random songs and plays through it once. Depending on the songs it may only play for half an hour before stopping.

I was assuming the Album Mix was broken and turning into a song mix.

All random mixes are broken. However, the alarm checks whether something is playing 20 seconds after an alarm was due. If it finds nothing is playing, it picks 10 tracks at random and plays them instead. This isn't the same as random song mix - it's just 10 tracks and when they're done, they're done. Hopefully 10 tracks is enough to wake you up though. At some point in the future, the 10 random tracks may be replaced by a builtin alarm tone or something.
