View Full Version : remote battery life

My remote battery seems to be dead (I'll replace it today). This seems like much too short a time to me. Were the batteries new when the beta units shipped?

Yes, the batteries are new from the factory.
I would suggest testing your battery to confirm it's the battery and not the remote.

uh, how would I test this battery?

In theory yes, but if the battery was unwrapped before it was packed
and shipped, it may have been pressed in the box.
The production units should not have this issue, but I'd love to hear
more if others are having similar experiences.

No problems here.

Still working from quite a few feet away, for me. I normally use the remote for all controlling, also.

Funny you mention it, I've already noticed my remote sometimes doesn't fire. I've only had it, what, 8 weeks? I never thought to check the battery (too soon), I thought I was aiming it wrong.

Either my remote is defective, or it came out of the box with a dead battery
Did you remove the sticker on the battery? There should be a white card
inserted with the remote packaging that shows you how to remove it.

Has anybody had a dead battery or bum remote from a NEW boom. I took off the cover and took of the clear plastic and nothing! Great way to start.....

ok so pressing on the thing and removing it a few times, seems to have done the trick..lets hope it stays..
I have received by Boom Box and it never worked. And it had no sticker on it!
Dump question: How can I open the remote? I have searched the whole docu and saw nowhere any hint how to open it.
The top and bottom slide apart along the length of the remote. The
battery goes in with the plus side toward the bottom of the remote.
The product should have shipped with a plastic label showing this, and
blocking the contact to the battery until it is removed by the end user.

Thanks for the quick reply! Just to clarify: If I hold the remote with the keys facing in the palm of my hand and the ir-eye of the control facing away from my, should I try to slide the "back cover" with my thumb towards me or away?

Toward you. But be careful. The battery is in the bottom part, so if
you are holding it with the keys down into your hand, the battery may
fall out.

Same problem with me. Sometimes the remote is reacting, sometimes it is not.
Hmm. It smells as if there were a problem on a little bit larger scale than just the batteries. I still do have four days to send the box back. Would be a pitty, though.
Any insight form the company folks here?

My remote didn't work out of the box either. This post got my to try using it while I squeezed where the battery is. That works, so thank you.
I can't get it to stay working without squeezing it. There isn't enough pressure on the battery contacts. Guess I'll try sticking some paper or something under the battery for a tighter fit. At least now I can program my universal remote. It worked for most functions, but no volume control.

My remote worked for about half an hour from new. Since then, removing the battery then re-inserting it sometimes gets it working for a moment or two. I was intending to contact Logitech for a replacement under warranty. However, after reading the posts in this thread, I'm wondering if there is any point as my problem is obviously not a one-off. There appears to be a design problem relating to the battery contacts. Unfortunately, these are inaccessible when the battery cover is open. Does anyone know how to unclip the cover - without breaking it off? I'm sure that if I can get access I can come up with a solution. If I get that far, I'll post my findings here.

That's silly. If it's defective then just contact Logitech and get it
replaced. If there was a bad batch made then you just got unlucky --
there are people out there using the remote without any troubles.

You're quite right - it is silly. I have asked Logitech for a replacement.

Just FYI, my idea of putting a folded piece of paper under the battery was enough to make my remote work reliably. Logitech needs to put some kind of spring on the bottom, but I'm fine with the paper. It's not like you can see it.
I have ploughed through two batteries in the short time (1 month) I have had my boom. Love the unit, but will be unhappy if I have to spend $4.99 a month on batteries for the remote!
ChrisMcE did you just contact logitech direct for a replacement? Did the replacement unit have a similar problem?

Yes, Logitech support were very helpful and efficient. In Europe, the remote is not available as a separate item, so Logitech sent me another complete Squeezebox Boom. They asked me to return the original remote (which I was happy to do) but did not need me to return the Boom. So I am now the happy owner of two Booms - and one remote!
The new remote seems to be fine but I have not used it a great deal and so cannot comment on its battery life. The problem I had previously was not that the battery was drained, but that it did not make proper contact with the remote. I have a fair bit of experience of consumer electronics (I have been designing products for 30 years) and would expect you to get several months of operation even from the small battery used in this remote.
Do you have any means of testing your two batteries to see if they are dead? If dead, then you have a different problem. Is there any chance a button could be stuck down?
Whatever the problem, you should be able to expect reasonable operational life from your remote. Like me, you should contact Logitech for a replacement.

Something is definitely amiss here. Had my Boom since August 08, used daily (literally), original battery in remote, works flawlessly.
Did you happen to see the mfg date on the purchased battery? I've seen batteries on store shelves 10 years old. :(
It is a minty fresh Duracell. I'll contact support!

Thanks for that idea. I squeezed the battery area and it worked (like another post recommended) Instead of a piece of paper, I just happen to have that "gunk" of adhesive that holds credit cards to the holder that is sent with it in the mail. The kind that "rolls" off the back of the card. I pressed it down and it kept the battery in place to close the cover and now it works better.
