Well, has anyone finally managed to successfully install SqueezeCentre on the eeePC? If so, what did you do & were there any hic cups?
Yes, it works fine on my 4g, but I don't know how well it would work/fit on the the 2g.
To install it I launched a terminal (ctrl+alt+t) and typed: sudo synaptic, then chose Settings>Repositories, where I added the repositories for debian and slim devices:
URI: http://debian.slimdevices.com/
Distribution: stable
Section: main
and
URI: http://http.us.debian.org/debian/
Distribution: etch
Section: main non-free contrib
I then exited synaptic, and in the terminal typed: sudo apt-get update, and then: sudo apt-get install squeezecenter, and clicked y when prompted.
Once installed SC can be started with: sudo /etc/init.d/squeezecenter start, and stopped with sudo /etc/init.d/squeezecenter stop.

I'm not familiar with the Linux OSes but would probably give it a try, thanks to you for your instructions.
I've been holding back on getting SC to work on the eePC because I don't have an external DVD drive to recover, should the install fail. It's great to know it has worked out for you! Thanks & well done.
PS: I hope your instructions are complete.. :)

Do you know about the F9 button? There is a copy of the OS on the EEE PC and you can restore by holding the F9 key when you power up. I think its the F9 key, its somewhere in the manual.

I didn't know about F9 Malaugh. Are you saying I could restore the eeePC environment if I connected it to the internet & pressing F9 when I power it up?
If so, that would be great cause it's a good way to have all the other eeePC software updated at the same time. I don't recall reading this in the manual but then again, I skimmed through it very quickly.
Cheers,
Ed

You don't need an internet connection to restore the OS. The eeepc uses unionfs to maintain a pristine copy of Linux (on /dev/sda1, I think) for restore.
BTW, I installed SC from source and also softsqueeze. I use it for plugin devlopment while I'm on the train!

Is your eeePC the 2GB or 4GB version? I have the 2GB. Also, was your install procedure the same as SKUNK's above?

Skunk, I hope you don't mind me asking but how do you launch a terminal session on the eeePC? I'm a novice when it comes to Linux matters & I have tried the CTRL+T without success.
Sorry about that, Ctrl+Alt+T is the terminal.
I also forgot to mention that once you get it all installed and get the message Squeezecenter Starting..., you have to open a browser and point it to http://localhost:9000, because there is no tray icon and no program shortcut.

How much free space is on your drive? I thought I read that there's only 400 Megs, which might be cutting it close as I seem to remember SC taking somewhere in the high 300's.
You could probably install SC on an SD memory card if push came to shove, but I wouldn't be much help with that.
It may be worth searching http://forum.eeeuser.com/ if you run into problems.

I think SC is more like 80 meg, not 300.

I'm not sure how big SC is, but I just F9'd the eeePC to delete all user files and install clean. After the reset I had 38 Megs of used memory, and after changing the repositories and updating there was 72 Megs used. After installing SC and its dependencies the disk utility is showing 395 Megs used.

I found out the CTL+ALT+DEL in another forum post & proceeded to try out your suggestions Skunk. Anyway, it worked fine until the system reported dependencies for SQL DB stuff & for my lack of Linux knowledge, I decided to abandon the exercise altogether.
I bit the bullet & proceeded to get a licenced copy of WinXP Home to run the SC on the 4G eeePC. After some hesitation, I replaced the entire Linux SSD with XP code.
Pleased to say everything turned out fine,, including access to music on the NAS. I was surprised I could fit quite a lot of stuff on the 4G SSD after purging most of the unnecessary XP files. This includes an early version of MS Office, iTunes, SC, MSN, IE, AntiVirus, etc.
Some tips to those intending to install SC on XP, assuming your eeePC runs Linux at the mo.,,
1. Sales of Win XP closing on 30 June (in Australia anyway) so get your order in before then
2. You may use either Win XP Pro or Home
3. You must use a SP2 Win XP install disk; earlier versions will not do & you will get the dreaded BSOD
4. After Win XP install, move directories (which get bigger over time) such as IE temp files to external storage (SD card). The eeePC manual should tell you which directories to work on
It's quite cool to have SC running from the eeePC. You get to enjoy portability & v low power consumption due to absence of HDD. Keep it running 24/7?
Good luck to those of you looking at moving from Linux to XP on the eeePC!
