so, i'm thinking of building a new computer soon. i intend to use a 500GB hard drive for all my cd's in high resolution (wav), a backup 500GB hard drive, and a 250GB for all my cd's on mp3. i figure i can set the high resolution albums as one playlist and the mp3 albums as another playlist. i was going to connect my SB3 via optical to my denon receiver for the mp3 playback. i was going to connect it via digital coax to a dac and then into my supratek cabernet (which is being built at this time). but i've got to wondering, can i have my music on multiple drives? i don't remember reading anything about it in the manual, but it just seems like that would throw a kink somewhere.

Yes, just put a link from one to the other.
I generally use a dedicated directory (say /Music) containing softlinks to all the other drives or directories which contain the music files.

Store them in FLAC - they will take 50% of the space and _all_ the data is preserved.
If you believe WAV sounds better (and no-one has proved it does, and no-one can provide an argument why it should, and I don't myself) then you can stream FLAC as WAV to your player.
a backup 500GB hard drive
Good idea. I have a second disk also and sync to it occasionally for backup.

i'm not too clear on what you mean by "links" from one drive to another. could you explain it a little more clearly?

i'm not too familiar with flac, but i'll give it a try if it'll save me space and is indistinguishable from wav. thanks for the heads up.

Assuming you're using windows, links are called 'shortcuts'. Create shortcuts to the top level directory of each of the places where your music files are, and put the shortcuts in the 'Music' directory. Then tell slimserver that your music is in 'Music'

i think i understand what you're saying. i can open the music's location in windows explorer, right click on it, send it to the desktop as a shortcut, and then drag that desktop shortcut into a "master" directory.
more than likely i'll use "my music" on the os drive as the "master" directory. then i'll create shortcuts to f:\flac and g:\mp3. does this sound right to you?
now, do i need to setup slimserver to scan the "master" directory when adding/looking for new music?
thanks for the help.

thanks for the help.
No problem.
