View Full Version : smart gain on album with only 'track gain'-tags

Hi,

I was wondering if Smartgain still works when playing an album, from which songs have only (replay gain) track-gain tags.

I've created my own album with various mp3's, so album gain is not an option. I would like to use track gain.
But I've read that in case a single album is played (in track order) album gain is used.
But what happens if there are only track gain tags?

Thanks,
Steven

If there are only track gain tags, then those are used.

Smart Gain will use album gain tags:

- if they are present

AND

- if you are playing the whole album, selecting it by album

Thanks Mark,
So just to verify if I understand you correct,
If I play the whole album, selecting it by album,
and the songs have only track gain tags, those are used?

That's what I want to achieve.

Thanks,
Steven

It should - it has nothing else to go on.

You can also say "Use track gain only".

Ok, but think I found the problem.
Unlike my other albums these files have the .wma extension, and as from what I've read on other posts on this forum Slimserver does not process some tags in wma files, tags like comment and replaygain.

(I don't know if it's important, but my wma's or not lossless)
When I browse the properties of the song on my squeezebox, I don't see any volume adjustment information, also not via the slimserver webinterface I only see this:

#
Title:C'est la vie
Artist:B Witched
Album:Kids allerlei
Genre:Kids
Track:20
Compilation:Yes
File Format:Windows Media
Duration:2:53
File Length:2,793,837 Bytes
Bitrate:128kbps VBR
Sample Rate:44.1 kHz

In the attached file you can see that replaygain tags are there, I even did a complete rescan in slimserver.
Can you confirm I'm right: some tags on wma files are not processed by Slimserver (using SlimServer Version: 6.5.3 - 12217 - Debian - EN - iso-8859-1)

Unfortunately I don't have WMA files so I can't confirm.

Hm. Unfortunately, in WMA the gain values are currently read from

GAIN_TRACK_GAIN
GAIN_TRACK_PEAK
GAIN_ALBUM_GAIN
GAIN_ALBUM_PEAK

Could you try to verify that by changing the tags on some sample files?

Oops. Did it again: Answering ancient posts ... sorry.

Well, thanks for doing so, because until now I assumed that RG simply didn't work on WMA files. Though I've been trying to replace them with FLAC, there are still a few, and they still give me a fright when they pop up in playlists when I thought I had RG turned on... I will try changing the tag names on a few tracks and see what happens...
