Hi,
I planning on buying a squeezebox, but I'd like to use it as a DAC as well and connect a cd player to it, but it has no digital input. I was wondering if there was a way todo this, like by modding it ?
Any help aprreciated,
thanks
The Transporter has a digital input http://slimdevices.com/pi_transporter.html?, however, it costs considerably more.

The DAC in the squeezebox is capable, but nothing to write home about, so rather than extensive/expensive mods that attempt to make it more like a Transporter, I'd go for an external DAC.
A couple other points:
*resale value of DAC might be higher than modded Sb3
*theoretically the sound from the Sb3 playing streamed music would be better than Cd>SPDIF>Sb3, so you'd actually lose ground.
*if you were going about modding it, i would look into I2S transmission from the transport to Sb3, rather than SPDIF. In fact I'd build a Philips CD Pro2m top-loading transport into a nice enclosure WITH the Sb3, which would be the value add over transporter IMO.
Cheers
