View Full Version : Radio streams stops playing
Hi,
Have got a SB3 two weeks ago, so I'am a newbie on this area.
I'am having problems when playing radio streams from SqueezeNework.
I have made my own Favorites list, with pure Danish radio stations. I.e. http://www.dr.dk/netradio/Metafiler/asx/dr_p4_koebenhavn_128.asx
When playing radio it suddenly stops, and return to the menu "Active Playlist". It can happen after playing radio for a few minutes or sometimes it can be after playing for 2 hours.
The Squeezebox runs wireless, and I don't have problems when playing MP3 files from Slimserver.
Can somebody tell me how I avoid these annoying interrupts when listening to the radio.
Best regards,
Poul Agerbek

I am having the exact same problem --- mostly with Pandora though. I've only seen a few others with similar complaints. Something must be going on though, because I've not had problem ever before... If I let the SB sit, within 10-15 mins it will typically play another 1-3 songs...then do the same thing...stalling.

my best guess, after reading many old internet posts, is that the SqueezeNetwork server has problems. It is run by Slim Devices.
I guess they don't have someone working on the weekend to fix it? Seems unlikely, but it must be the case.
We had friends over, and were trying to show off the SqueezeBox with Pandora, but it was a bust.
It is too bad Slim doesn't send out a 'we are working on it' email - we do pay for the service (not much, i admit, but still...)

If you look at the forum on Pandora it looks like this is fixed with Fimware upgrade and Slimserver version upgrade (although I only needed to update firmware and was fine)

Thanks for your advice, but I'am sorry it did'nt work with a firmware upgrade on the SB.
I have discovered that a message appears shortly when radio stops playing:
"Problem: Can't connect to Squeezenetwork"
After a short while the SB returns to the "Active playlist" menu.

That sounds like a network connection problem since two separate TCP connections to stations and Squeeznetwork failed - either between SB and router or SB and internet in general.
Are you using Wireless ?
If so you could be experiencing intermittent bursts of interference caused by some electrical device such as microwave.

I'am using wireless connection to the SB, but I don't have a microwave owen. I have a wirless phone.
When playing music from Slimserver I don't have any problems at all.
Maybe I should try to move th SB near the router and connect with a cable, to see if the problem still occurs.

Sources of burst of interferecne that can affect 802.11 include (not exhaustive) : Microwave ovens, cordless phones, Bluetooth, wireless video cameras, outdoor microwave links, wireless game controllers, Zigbee, fluorescent lights, burglar alarms and WiMAX. Even bad electrical connections can cause broad RF spectrum emissions.
A test of reasonable duration using a wired connection is the best way to eliminate the possibility of interference.

Hi,
Now I have tried connecting the SB3 directly to the router with a cable, but it don't seems to make any difference. It still drops out after playing for a while, it can be after 5 minutes or some times it can play for 1½ hour. (I have remembered to change the network settings to cable in the SB3). I have returned to wireless because the SB3 has to be placed in the living room.
I have discovered that it is possible to play "radioio.com - no boundaries" nearly without dropping out !

Have you tried any of this (from the Wiki)?
Network Test and Network Health
A useful diagnostic test is the Network Test, found among the plugins on the Squeezebox. It will report on the quality of reception at various speeds. A quality of 90% at 2000Kbps is ample for playing FLAC files. Of course, for MP3 one needs only look at the quality for much lower speeds, while uncompressed formats (AIFF and WAV) will need good quality at higher speeds.
Even more useful is the Server and Network Health page of the Web interface. The link to this page is in the Help section of the Home page. It provides a lot of information that can help in diagnosing problems.
Do you have the same problem when playing radio using Softsqueeze on your PC ?
If you do - then it will be possible to monitor the connection and get a better idea whether the problem is network related or your ISP. Some ISPs are traffic shaping which can affect audio.
Audio connections will show up network problems much more clearly than other apps such as file transfer or browsing.
With audio if data doesn't arrive in time due to errors or network congestions - then connections break as data didn't arrive in time to be played.
When the same problem happens with a browser or file transfer - it just appears as a small delay as there is no time constraint.
Funny enough, the last couple of days I have experienced dropouts also, both on Internet Radio from SS and from SqueezeNetwork. I checked the buffer in the display, it says 10 seconds buffer, then I checked the SqueezeNetwork settings, here it said 3 seconds so I changed that to 10 seconds, but still it happened again.
Never had problems before and nothing changed in my system.
I have also xperienced stop in various occasions. Have you in this thread, solved the problem or ?. The thread seems to have ended. ?
My problems is the same some times 5 min ok sometimes 2 hours o, on the same statio. My SS run fo hous with no problem - meaning no wireless problem. 95% signal
Hi,
Sorry that I have been inactive in this thread, it was me that initiated it.
I still have the problem, and have not got a solution so it will work without dropping out when playing i.e. danish radiostations.
As recommended I have tried playing radio streams from Softsqueeze, but that does'nt work. When selecting a station under Favorites (which will play on the SB3) I get an error, saying "Error can't open remote URL", and another URL than the one I have defined on Squeezenetwork ! It only displays for less than a second, so I can hardly reach to read it. But it's something with mms://media....
Best regards,
Poul Agerbek
If you post the URL you are having problems then people can try them as well.
Some of your error message indicate problems with the URL itself.
Hi,
Maybe someone would be kind and try one of the URL's that I frequently drops out:
http://www.dr.dk/netradio/Metafiler/asx/dr_p4_koebenhavn_128.asx
As mentioned before, I can play from radioio.com withhout problems.
Best regards,
Poul Agerbek
Hi,
Had a strange experience few minutes ago, the SB3 was playing from raioio.com, and had done that for about 2 hours, when it suddenly by itself switched to one of my Favorites. It was to the URL I have
mentionend earlier in this thread: http://www.dr.dk/netradio/Metafiler/asx/dr_p4_koebenhavn_128.asx
After playing for about five minutes, it dropped out and returned to the menu "Activ playlist" ???
Best regards,
Poul Agerbek
Bump!
What is happening with Internet Radio, both via SqueezeNetwork and SlimServer?
Best regards
Hey Agerbek - and others.
Try this: mms://wmscr1.dr.dk/e02ch03m
Use the links on DR's website named "Linux/Flip4Mac" instead of "Høj" (Links found here: http://www.dr.dk/netradio/afspillere.asp)
Best regards
Hi FB67,
Thanks for your suggestion which made me happy for a while, but I'am sorry it worked for about 10 minutes, then it dropped out again.
When it dropped out, I also lost the wireless connection to my laptop which was connected to www.squeezenetwork.com ?
For several times, I have now tried playing from mms://wmscr1.dr.dk/e02ch03m and had a browser window open on SN, where I can see the player status. Every time it drops out after 5 to 10 minutes, and the laptop looses the wireless connection.
When playing from radioio.com the SB3 plays without dropouts, and the laptop stays connected wireless (with a windows open on SN where I can follow whats being played on the SB3).
Best regards,
Poul Agerbek
You should check for network error, retries and/or timeouts on your network connection when playing radio - test with WMA built disabled so that network stats comes from PC interface.
I know of one user who had problems with radio but everything else seemed to work OK - it turned out to be a faulty network interface.
Hi,
Now following happend just few minutes after my last reply:
The SB3 had been playing radioio.com for about half an hour, when suddenly the volume raised without I had done anything ! After about 10 seconds the SB3 switched and began to play from mms://wmscr1.dr.dk/e04ch09m and again then connection was lost on my laptop ?????, after 2 minutes it stopped playing from mms://wmscr1.dr.dk/e04ch09m. When I pressed PLAY on the remote, it continued playing from radioio.com ?????
Best regards,
Poul Agerbek
That behaviour is what would happen if the two stations were in a playlist with repeat on. If one station stops, SS would move onto the next station in the playlist - if at the end of the list then play the first one again.
If that is the case, then your underlying problem is the interruption of a station.
Hi all
Have had a lot of problems with streaming radioon SB3. First bought a new router. Then discarded all cables between router and modem etc. But at last I soved my problems. I went to my dansish ISP and got a new ADSL modem and that solved all problems. Can stay tuned on squeese radios for many hours with no drop outs.
Hi Rasso01,
Thanks for your info. I have thought about trying with another router, if it doesn't solve the problem, then I will contact my ISP.
Best regards,
Poul Agerbek
Hi,
Think I have located the problem to my Asus WL-500g wireless router. I have tried to switch back to the router, Efficient SpeadStream 5781 (not a wireless router), I got from my ISP when DSL was initially installed.
When running wired on the SpeedStream it seems like I can play radio without dropouts. I have tried running cabeled to the Asus router where I got dropouts. So I don't think it's a wireless problem, but another problem with the Asus router.
Best regards,
Poul Agerbek
Hi,
When I switched back to my Asus WL-500g router, the dropouts began again, both with wired connection and wireless.
Thought that a firmware upgrade of the router could be worth trying, and guess what ? After the firmware upgrade the SB3 has
been playing radio like never before :-)
Thanks to all of you who have contributed with advice in this thread.
Best regards,
Poul Agerbek
Yes, dont know if I mentioned it, but its almost always a router problem.
I couldnt get my SB3 going, and the router crashed, updated firmware on the router and have been cruising since.....except my favorites at SqueezeNetwork seem to not work sometimes, putting them in again helps....but thats a SqueezeNetwork problem I think.
Hilsen fra Norge.....
Niels.
