During a post work beer this evening the discussion drifted onto "what albums would you take to a desert island?"

Without having to think I said:

1. The Songs of Leonard Cohen - an album I can honestly say that I have played near enough every week since I discovered it at the age of 14 back in 1981
2. Morrison Hotel by The Doors - I still get excited every time I listen to a Doors album, doesn’t matter which one
3. Gladsome, Humour and Blue by Martin Stephenson and the Daintees - just a beautiful album

I just wondered which category below other people were in:

1. that’s easy, its x,y,z
2. ooo, I'll have to think about that

Type 2 here.

Both Pink Floyd- Meddle and Jerry Garcia and David Grisman- Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, are reflex responses.

The third would be tougher. Probably either a classic Jazz or Ambient album, but I'd have a hard time picking.

Type 3 here: my desert island disc would be a 750G drive... I have a short attention span and get bored easily. (See, you should have said "CD" not disc....)

He didn't say disk though :-)

I'm type 1 with two or fewer discs, type 2 with more. The question seems to imply three.

1. Pink Floyd - Meddle
2. Stevie Wonder - Innervisions

...only THREE?!?!?

At this point I would flip a coin:
Heads: Dave Brubeck Quartet - Live at Carnegie Hall (2 disc set, am I cheating?)
Tails: Mississippi John Hurt - 1928 Sessions
Lands on its Side/Rolls Away: Robyn Hitchcock - I Often Dream of Trains

Um, whatever's most recent in my collection? I do get bored, no matter
how masterful the album. Still, here's some:

XTC, Skylarking
Billy Bragg, Back to Basics
Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians, Globe of Frogs
They Might Be Giants, John Henry
Neutral Milk Hotel, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

Wholly Humble Heart - I loved that track. Will buy the album now I'm reminded of it (although it looks like I'll have to get it used - deleted?)

Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
Can I take the ten-disk box set of Beethoven's String Quartets by Quartetto Italiano?

Kirk Lorange - No Apostrophe
Gerry Rafferty - Night Owl
Lloyd Cole - Lloyd Cole

That wasn't so hard...mind you, there would have to be plenty of shiraz grapes growing nearby...and my book on vitculture handy, and my childhood sweetheart on the same island. She has her own 3 discs to choose as well, right?

Lloyd Cole - Lloyd Cole

Ah, yes. Definitely need to get this again - wore out the cassette and haven't heard it in years...... thanks for reminding me!

First 2 are easy, 3rd is soooooo hard.....

1. U2 - The Unforgettable Fire
2. Simon & Garfunkel - Simon & Garfunkel's Greatest Hits (the one with the live version of 59th St. Bridge Song)

but only 1 more - aaagh!
maybe Lloyd Cole? maybe David Gray? - but which one?

Yes, it's a gem - classic heartbroken Cole. Fantastic melodies and some of those lyrics - whew, who was she and what did she do to him?

Like several others, my first two aren't too difficult;

1 - Whirlpool by Dr Phibes & The House Of Wax Equations
2 - Sketches Of Spain by Miles Davis

Then things get difficult. There's lots of stuff I really love but in terms of 'go to' albums I could listen to time and time again. I guess it would be one of the following;

A Meeting By The River by Ry Cooder & VM Bhatt
Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
Hex by Bark Psychosis
The Hounds Of Love by Kate Bush
either of the 2 albums by Red Temple Spirits
and the list goes on . .

Joni Mitchell - Blue: probably her finest album. Great melodies, lyrics, and her voice was never better. Carey, River, California, ... all the songs are winners.

Eva Cassidy - Songbird. A collection of Eva's best. Superb vocals and emotion; Over the Rainbow is pure magic. Other top songs: Fields of Gold, Songbird.

Acoustix - Stars and Stripes: 4-part a cappella harmony at its best. Their renditions of Blackbird Medley, This is the Moment, and Stars and Stripes Forever are incredible.

and one single:

IZ - Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World from Facing Future: If you've never heard this fabulous Hawaiian singer, do yourself a favor and listen to this track; it's available on Rhapsody. If you are not moved, your heart is made of wood. Sadly, like Eva Cassidy, he died at a young age, but his music lives on.

Isn't the power of sugestion sneaky?
Fast Eddy asked what albums would you take etc.
he didn't specify a number.
He did name 3 CDs he would take, hence the assumption there was a limit.

So I would take my entire collection :-)

(maybe I should have been a lawyer)

Two wonderful albums, plus one which has a track list starting: 1. Stars and Stripes Forever 2. Star Spangled Banner 3. God Bless the U.S.A. Errm, I'm not sure this one will end up on my wish list (and that was my intention as albums 1 & 2 are so good!)

Perhaps I'm just the wrong side of the pond for it...

I wanted to throw a four-part a cappella harmony (aka "barbershop") album into the mix, since I really enjoy it and so few music lovers are familiar with the genre.

Let me suggest an alternative for those of you on the other side of the pond: Platinum. This quartet won the International Barbershop Championship in 2000, and are famous for their extended "tags" (chords held at the end of a song). Their rendition of Auld Lang Syne is amazing; the tenor holds the final note for 32 seconds! "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Jimmy Webb Medley" on their "Be Our Guest" album are also stunning.

Another great group is The Boston Common, International Barbershop champions in 1980, who are noted for their rich, robust, room-filling sound. Their Collective Works two-disc set is a must-have for any lover of four-part harmony.

If you're looking to expand your musical horizons, check these groups out. These guys can sing!

He lead the witness by saying x,y,z.

Under further cross examination, I would add:
Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark, Hejira
Supertramp - Crime of the Century
Michael Franks - any of them really, but probably all of them
George Benson - The George Benson Collection
Robert Plant - Now and Zen
Steely Dan - All of them.......

Now, if it pleases the court, I'd like an adjournment otherwise I'll be here all day....
