View Full Version : Has anyone actually heard "Veronique" by Pink Martini?
Is it any good? What's it like?

If you are comfortable with Brazilian music or Jazz, you should get along fine with it.
... not, in my opinion, thier best effort. There are some terrific songs on the second CD (Hang on Little Tomatoe) but Sympathique stands out as a really inspired bit of whimsy (you know how some people's best effort comes when not really trying?)
look forward to hearing your opinion
Listened to it. Really not my cup of tea.

I first heard Sympathique off a lounge album I picked up from Borders. Then I found the album and got a hold of "Hang on Little Tomato" as well. I enjoy the variety and it is personally more appealing than The Chieftans whom I enjoy a bit of (only have Fire in the Kitchen). Not hard to understand why it wouldn't be somebody's cup of tea when tea isn't everyones drink. I mean some people like {*shudder*} country!

I heard an interview of some of the members of Pink Martini one morning last week on NPR, and they played a couple of their tunes live.
I though to myself, "That names sounds familar." But I just couldn't place where I'd heard it before.
I was really enjoying the samples of their music they presented. So when I got home that night, I switched my kitchen SB3 to SqueezeNetwork, went to Pandora, and asked it to build a station based on the music of Pink Martini.
"Veronique" was the first track that played. Looking at my SB3 it suddenly dawned on me where I'd heard -- or rather, seen -- the name Pink Martini before.

I saw them in Portland last Tuesday for the concert for the release of their new CD.
They put on a heck of a show (although since they are from Portland, the traveling show may not be as large... they had the 10-piece band, a 10-piece string section, a 16 voice chorus and a 20 or so piece marching band... not all were on the stage at once...)
Two sold-out shows in Portland, with a very surprising mix of people: the vast majority were in their 30's and older, but there was a surprising number of seniors there, which I wouldn't have guessed at all.
Since my original post, I have listened a few more times to Hang On Little Tomato. It's definitely not the type of music I listen to regularly, but some of the songs I really enjoy.
