Let's get a free music thread going,

where do you get free music from:

1)www.stompy.com
2)www.magnatune.com
3)www.archive.org
4)www.etree.org
5)www.furthurnet.org
6)www.shnflac.net

I found some of these in past posts and use 3-6 myself. Would love it if some folks could put up some more.

LET'S LEAVE THOSE WITH DRM PROTECTION OUT OF THE LIST.

May I controversially say that I don't want free music? I generally like to pay for music, in the hope that record companies make decent stuff? I recognise the mild absurdity :)

The only free stuff I listen to is Radio 3, which I guess I pay for in terms of a licence fee. I'm starting to experiment with LastFM as a way of finding new artists, but I reckon I spend enough ($100ish per month) on music already - do I need more artists?!?!

I pay for music when it is deserved. I guess I should have qualified my comments. The reason I look for "free" music is to discover new bands and new CDs that I want to buy. Some of these websites are great for this purpose. 95% of the music I download is in lossey format from sites such as etree.org

Support your favorite artists at sites like these, make copies of the music and spread it to all your friends. This is how a lot of these bands get known. I pay for my music to bigger bands on these sorts of sites by going to their shows.

The days of bands putting out a junk CD with one good song on it is over. Musicians are going to need to step up to the plate and consistently put out good music to make it in today’s world. Tour as much as possible and pack those stadiums, I say.

Mostly electronic music, but some indie rock:

It's an "MP3 blog" and there are apparently lots of others covering other genres.

These are new, independent artists getting their material and name out there. My brother knows an independent musician or two, they ovewhelmingly love doing stuff like this - free promotion at a critical phase in their career.
