Being new to the NSLU2, I tried an installation of unslung and built SS6.5 (from info posted here) on it. It seems to compile ok but is quite slow in starting up. Scanning for music was worse!

Is this just a slug-thing, or are there ways to speed things up (is there any general documentation regarding SS6.5 installations) ?

Is it normal to get so many warnings?

Also, would there be any advantage in running debian (or other slug linux installations) instead of unslung from an ss6.5 point-of-view?

My SS6.5 now runs quite well on my slug.
The key was that SS fires up its own instance of MySQL, so stopping the default instance freed up valuable resources, and SS started to work...

I'm running SS6.3.1 on a slug with some success, but haven't tried 6.5.1 yet, due to bad reports by others on here.

I'd be grateful for any tips on how you solved the problems.

I have not had any real problems. I've tested most everything now, too, and all seems fine. I have yet to get the HD to spin-down though (logs and dev to ramdisk, but still no joy). And SS complains about the FILE param in my cue files.

All I did was to follow the hints in these threads. The main things are to get your paths and permissions set right before you start.

I may go through an installation again, and will post my notes.

BTW My system does not use flash drives - just a single 80GB Lanserver drive in USB mode.

Thanks for the info Geoff. I'm using a 2G flash for the unslung system and 250G drive for the music and other storage.

I tried unslinging to a small 4G HDD microdrive in place of the flash, but found that everything was much slower than with the flash. That may be to do with the access time of the 1" drive tho'.

I am using a swap file on the hard drive to reduce the number of writes to the flash and to improve processing speed.

I'm very pleased with the peformance, and the only downside is that the system will not run LAME and possibly won't run Mplayer successfully either. So I don't use AlienBBC at the moment.
