Time and a few releases have passed since I last informed you about a new release of SSODS. So here are a few notes on the new release r2b9.
Features of SSODS:
Works with all PowerPC based DiskStations (DS-106 series, CS-406 series, DS-101g+).
Supports SlimServer versions 6.2.x, 6.3.x and 6.5.x (i.e. stable releases).
Reasonable performance (depending on the DiskStation model and SlimServer version used).
Easy installation (like a firmware upgrade; no need to reboot, telnet or hack the command line).
Supports many 3rd party plugins, such as AlienBBC, MusicInfoSCR, SiriusRadio, Scanner, LazySearch, TrackStat and others (manual installation necessary).
Integrates into the DiskStation’s administrative interface (incl. access protection).
Supports all internal file formats of the SqueezeBox (AIFF, FLAC, MP3, WAV, Windoze Media, Ogg).
Comes with mplayer, lame, vorbis-tools, flac, sox, alac, shorten, mac-port and mppdec for on-the-fly transcoding of many exotic file formats (needs manual configuration).
Provides facilities to export and import of user data (preferences and playlists).
Supports automatic start on boot of the DS (configurable).
Does not touch the DiskStation’s other functionality at all and allows HDD standby (the latter depends on the used DiskStation model and the installed SlimServer version).
A complete deinstallation is possible.
Allows updating the DS firmware (via deinstallation, upgrade, re-installation).
Allows seamless upgrade of SSODS without loosing user data (database, preferences, Slimserver programme).
Supports upgrade-persistent 3rd party addons (to SSODS) like Mr_Hyde's to-become-famous "USBswap" mod.
SSODS is considered rather stable and seems to work for most people out-of-the box and without major issues.

There is one major (well, it depends on your need, for me it's rather minor) issue with running Slimserver on Diskstations which is the problem of the harddisk not spinning down when SS and the Squeezebox are idle. It seems to be related to swapping activity because of the huge memory footprint of "slim"server. Mr_Hyde provides an addon to SSODS which allows the user to use a USB memory stick as a swap device. Please note that this is ongoing research and development (here in the forum).
I added a poll to this thread and ask the users of SSODS to vote for the Diskstation model they use. It would be interesting to see which DS are used.

P.S. A suggestion to you music addicts. Last saturday I have been to a really great concert. A young woman from Zürich, Switzerland with a beautiful voice sings (English and Swiss German) and plays the acoustic guitar or the piano, sometimes accompanied by another guitar, a trombone or drums.
