Hi All,

It would be great if a feature was added to both the SqueezeNetwork and the Slimserver to allow login to RSS Feeds.

The reason for wanting this is because EBay now does RSS feeds for advanced search criteria, eg, if you want to know when something heavy (like furniture) becomes available within 10 miles of your house.

Unfortunately however, these rss feeds require your ebay login and password for reasonably obvious reasons.

I am pretty new to all this, I did search and could not find any previous posts so I assume I am the only person who would like this... ;o) If someone could point me in the direction of the source code for the rss ticker, I would happily take a look and have a go myself. Or if someone could point me in the right direction for the protocol for this sort of thing, that would be appreciated to.

kindest regards

Have you tried adding login:passwort@ to the url (eg.
http://me:mypw (AT) www (DOT) domain.com/myfeed)?

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I haven't tried that no, would it not mean that your login and password would be passed in plain text across the internet? or is that dealt with in some way?

does that happen anyway when you use other RSS readers to log into RSS feeds?

Sorry to throw questions into the air, not a subject I know much about.

good info though, I shall try it..

thanks.

It doesn't make a difference whether you enter it in the url or in a
separate field: as long as it's not SSL encrypted (https) it travels as
plain text. If you use a https connection, it's encrypted.

Yes, except if you the url is https.

OK, So I decided not to try the login information with my current ebay account due to the security issues.. (they do not provide rss feeds using https://) and did a search on secure rss feeds which led me to information that my gmail inbox could be ticking away in front of me whilst I'm sitting watching tv.
Unfortunately using squeezenetwork to add the feed using

https://myusername:mypassword@gmail.google.com/gmail/feed/atom

It comes back with 401 authentication error I think that this could be because the username needs to be an email address and then it switches to being 404 not found... I assume because 2 @ signs before the address is not permitted..

OR https dosent work with the squeezebox RSS feeds.

am I trying things that are still a way off?

Steve.

try name%40yourdomain.com:pw (AT) www (DOT) gmail.com... Replace the first @ with a
%40 - which is the url encoded version of @. I don't know whether this
will work, but it's worth a try.

I'll give this a try with my Gmail account. We'll make it work.
HTTPS is supported by the way.

OK this works for me in 6.5, however we don't parse Atom feeds at the
moment. I'll add Atom support shortly. I didn't need to include "%
40gmail.com" as part of my username either, just https://
username:password@... works for me.

Ok, I don't get it to work on the Squeezenetwork page.
It seems to work from the slimserver setup, I'll know for sure when I get home :)

Its all good though, thanks!

I like the potential for this as the gmail RSS feed allows you to filter by labels, hence you could get very specific news via google alerts sent to a gmail label and then only show that label on the squeeze box. The possibilities are almost endless! well, until I get bored and move on.

thanks again,

Steve.

I've checked in support for Atom. Gmail feeds now work properly.
This will show up on SqueezeNetwork soon.

Excellent, I look forward to it!

Now then... I must eat some humble pie..

You do NOT need login information to use RSS feeds for searches in ebay. It works fine without it.

Ahem.. sorry... it appears that my rss reader asked me for a username and password and it didn't work the first time until I had entered this information. Therefore I assumed... and assumption is the mother of all @#!! ups.

Thanks for all the help anyway, I learned a fair bit.

Steve.
