Hi there.

I found this NAS http://edbpriser.dk/Products/Listprices.asp?ID=159498#

It's not possible to buy a QNAP here in Denmark, so will this work?

If it will, how do I install slimserver on it?

Do you know how big a harddrive I can put into it?

Thanks

Flim from Denmark

See Compatibility & Estimated Performance Chart at http://oinkzwurgl.org/ssods/

And consider to use the search facility of this board with the keywords "synology", "diskstation", "ssods", "ds-101j", ...

Hi again.

Well - as I see it there's 2 options.

1.
I can buy the 101j and install slimserver ver 6.2 or 6.3 on it

2.
I can buy the more expensive 106 and install ver 6.5

If 101j fine I would rather buy that. Is there a big difference between 6.3 and 6.5?

It's almost $100 in difference between 101j and 106 so if 101j works I'll buy that.

The 406 is out of the question. It's way to expensive.

So what would you recommend between 101j and 106?

Thanks again

Minor point.

If you plan to use
* transcoding
* AlienBBC (RealAudio)
* WMA streams on SoftSqueeze

then go for DS106.

I was planning to rip my cd's to FLAC and play the from the NAS.

Transcoding don't I know what is, and I'm not gonna listen to WMA-files or listen to AlienBBC.

So you would recommend the 101j and slimserver 6.2 og 6.3??

Sorry for these questions - but I'm not sure what to buy. The only thing I actually want, is to play music from a harddrive when my pc is off.

Is the 101j good enough to do that?

What is the cost difference between a 101 and a 106?

I'd be inclined to go with the more powerful version. ss 6.2 or 6.3 might be fine for you just now, but in the future there may be a killer feature you want from 6.x or 7.x and the 101 isn't able to handle it. Would be different if i already had a 101, it would be hard to justify buying a second unit right now, but as you have nothing atm, to me this would make more sense.

Here are the prices in US-Dollars: (the few Synology avalible in Denmark)

CS-406 : $760
DS-106 : $320
DS-106e: $250
DS-106j: $220
DS-101j: $185

I guess the fight stands between the 106 and 101j.

If someone in between is good enough I'll buy that.

But you're probably right about the future. Maybe I have to buy a new one in a year or two if I buy the 101j now.

Now that you have seen the prices - would you still recommend the DS-106?

Thanks

Well - I think I has come to a conclusion.

I'm buying the 101j and installing Slimserver 6.3.

I think the 106 is to expensive for me right now. I also need a harddrive (can you recommend anyone)??

Maybe in 2 years or so, I will buy another NAS, but right now I can't afford a 106 og 406.

So please - the last thing - I need to know which harddrive I should put into it.

Thanks

If you ever want to be able to do anything other than just Slim Serve then the extra bucks are worth it - you may even find that you can get a good deal on the HDD which saves pennies for the 106. Certainly as the SB3 and Transporter evolve the new features will not be supported :(

I'd also note that you'll probably find that with only 32MB of RAM the SqueezeBox will respond slowly to the remote, and the web interface will certainly be very slow. Slimserver 6.3 will run, but it would be much happier with 64MB. That would mean a DS-101 (not 101j) or a DS-106. The price difference between the 101j and the 106 works out to only a handful of CDs (a very small handful if CDs are as expensive in Danmark as everything else is!) that you would have to defer buying.

I'll confess that I have not been following the Synology developments closely, so if actual users think the 101j performance is reasonable then believe them, not me. But when the developer says "not recommended", I would tend to listen. The Synology hardware and flipflip's very un-hacky slimserver integration look like a very nice solution.

Thanks for the answer...

But I can't afford it, and I am not going to use it to anything else but Slimserver. If so in a few years, I'll buy a new one.

If just Slimserver works then I'm happy.

I've read that the 101j doesn't have a fan. Should I pick a specific harddrive bacause of that?

Now I just need help to find the best harddrive to plug in to it.

Can/will you help?!

Well well....

Everybody keeps saying that 64 mb is so much better than 32, so now you got be conviced (sorry for my poor english).

I'm gonna buy the DS-106. Who knows - maybe I'll add some ftp/web server later.

But still - I need a harddrive? And what about the fan? In the DS-106 there's one fan. Does it make noise?

Guys - please help me out here. Tell me what you would recommend!

I just put into a QNAP a western digital WDS II series SATA drive... the QNAP is fanless. The price was good - and worth the pennies... but I was helped as QNAP have a 'known to work' list. Check to see if there is a synology recommended / verified HDD list.

If you look at Brack Electronics www.brack.ch you can find a DS106X - a 128MB version. Ive no idea what the price difference between CHF and Danish Kroner (or are you Euro now) but I would be willing to help out with shipping. PM me if necessary.

Now you're talking... ;o) Believe me, slimserver will really appreciate having 64MB RAM, and will probably use close to all of it. When I mentioned the web interface in my earlier post, I meant the web interface for slimserver, not a separate web server process.

Sorry, but I don't have any advice on hard drives for the DS. It's just been a few years since I've shopped for a bare drive, so any info I have is hopelessly outdated.

I found this list:
http://www.synology.com/enu/support/help-page.php?q_id=130

But I don't know which one makes the most noise, and which one is the most quiet one.

I've heard some good things about the Samsung Spinpoint, so I'll probably buy that unless people tell me not to

http://www.storagereview.com/comparison.html

I chose one which is silent and has a low power dissipation. It was a Samsung SP120, if I remember correctly.

The fan ist annoying sometimes. But you cannot have a fast and powerful and fanless NAS at this price.

I still did not find the anwer to the question:
Is the DS101j performance good enough to stream FLAC to a SB3?
(I understand the limitations of this model mentioned in this thread, but I am only interested in streaming my FLAC music with my PC off.

Thanks in advance for a reaction,

The DS-101j would be performant enough to stream anything anywhere.
BUT there is no supported SSODS for this devices. It does work somehow but needs (at least with recent firmwares of the DS) a more or less manual installation. I DO NOT recommend to buy this devices. See also http://oinkzwurgl.org/ssods for a list of recommended devices with SSODS.

If you want reasonable performance and no problems with the installation buy a DS-106 (and not a DS-106e or 106j) or, even better, a CS-406.

Just want to share my experience with my DS101j running Slimserver (SSODS).

I was looking for a 1) low power 2) low noise 3) low cost NAS solution to listen to my FLAC music with Slimserver.
DS101j is delivering this, at the cost of lower performance. The harddisk will spin down when it not used (low power) and the fanless design ensures low noise.
Slimserver Web interface is slow but usable for configuration purposes. When not running other services at the same time, I consider the reaction time to remote control acceptable (worst is maybe the volume control).

Installation of SSODS on the latest 426 firmware is possible with the standard procedure, but after installation you have to insert the following line
leaf_9ssods ="/tools/ssods.cgi"
in the file /usr/syno/synoman/tree.conf to enable the SSODS menu tab (using telnet and vi editor). This is described in German forum, just wanted to repeat it here in English forum.

Last.fm plugin can be installed and is working without problem, AlienBBC cannot be installed however.

I am pleased to see that Synology continues supporting the older models by upgrading the firmware also for the DS101j
Apart from using it for Slimserving my SB3, it can be used as ftp server, download station (including bittorrent), web, photo, backup and printer station. A lot of functionality for the money.

Resuming: Slimserver can be used for on this station (thank you flipflip) but will be somewhat slow and not all plugins will work. For me only using it to listen to FLAC music, and some radio stations this is good enough. To get more out of full Slimserver functionality you will need a more expensive model.

=================
Synology DS101j
Firmware Version: 2.0.3 - 0426
SSODS release: r1b4-armv5b (modified tree.conf to enable ssods menu)
Hardware: synology_ixp420_junior.
SlimServer version: 6.3.1-8476.

continued from previous post

My workaround for not having AlienBBC while running Slimserver on DS101j:
When I want to listen to AlienBBC I switch to use the slimserver installed on my PC. To switch between Slimserver on PC and diskstation: use remote control to switch first to Squeezenetwork and then back to Slimserver. While "connecting to slimserver" is on display, use left arrow, and all devices in your network will be displayed, so you can choose between diskstation or PC.
For this I had to downgrade (in my particular case) to Slimserver 6.3.1 on my PC in order to have same Slimserver versions on both machines. If not, the Squeezebox will automatically change firmware each time you change system.
To have access to music folder on Diskstation from Slimserver installed on PC: give RO rights to "users" on music share on diskstation, map music as drive on PC , and use \\diskstation\music style notation for your music folder in Slimserver on PC.
In this way it is easy to toggle using Slimserver on PC (for using AlienBBC or for example to have fast webinterface to show off to your friends) and back to diskstation (for everyday 24/24h use). Best of both worlds!
