Hi,
Right some of you have everything working nicely and some of you don't so here are some of my findings.
1. Patience is a virtue! SS 6.5 takes a lot longer to install and run on re-boot.
2. When you first install 6.5 it will do a re-index of your music collection - this will take hours to complete if you have a reasonable sized music collection. Your Squeezeboxes will not be useable whilst SS 6.5 is scanning your music collection. If you try and play anything then you will experience stuttering and freezing of your SB.
3. SS 6.5 runs fine on a TS-101 if you don't use the SS web front end for control. If you just use it for setup then you'll be fine. There is a pause of between 1 and 6 seconds when moving between pages and it depends on which page you go to. The TS-101/201 needs more memory and we are investigating the possibility of upgrading the units to 192Mb which we believe would make the TS-101/201 fly when running SS 6.5. Currently you can free up some resources by switching off some of the other TS-101 features
4. For those who want to go back cleanly to 6.3.1 then there is a new downgrade tool on www.progressiveav.com/ts101_update. This update/downgrade file will downgrade your TS-101 to 6.3.1 - none of your settings will be kept and your database will be totally cleared. You will also have to re-install any plugins you have installed and use
5. There is a new All In One Plugins update for SS 6.5 which has the latest AlienBBC and Weather plugins - enjoy!
If anybody has any further problems either post them or PM me.
Thanks

Paul,
Thanks for that. Will try the downgrade file later. My QNAP was left overnight to install 6.5. This morning the disk is still randomly accessing so won't sleep. Stuttering now starts after 3 minutes rather than 1 minute.I never use the web front end for control. The QNAP is used uniquely for Slimserver, so all other QNAP features are, and always have been, disabled.
Hope this helps with your research into what the problem is.
Jerry
Paul,
Excellent work. Thanks very much for the speedy update.
Paul,
> Excellent work. Thanks very much for the speedy update.
Seconded.
Like Jerryacg my TS-101 runs only Slimserver, all other features that can be switched off are.
I'd installed 6.5 and waited 'till it had finished scanning my collection and could tell me how many tracks/albums/artists I had. I then installed Alien BBC and tested playback of some FLAC files and the Radio 1 stream. I had no issues with stuttering during playback though my test only lasted about 10 mins.
I'm not bothered by the slowdown of the web interface but I am bothered by the fact that the TS-101 won't spin down it's disk - that's why I'll be going back to 6.3.1 tonight.
I'd be interested in a memory upgrade if it improved performance and let the TS-101 spin down it's disk whilst running 6.5+. Any idea how much such an upgrade would cost?
Cheers,
Rich

Would it be an "easy fix"? Sounds time consuming and expensive....

Even though I have only had my TS101 a month I quite liked the sound of upping the memory, on telling my wife this "good" news, she told me, that's the problem with technology, always out of date!

The memory isn't going to be expensive, I think the installation cost will be were it is at.
We don't have the facilities to do it so we will have to farm it out to a 3rd party.
Currently we need to know if it is going to work!

But it's the rate of change that keeps us interested...
... and with good excuses to buy new toys! :)
My setup seems to be working OK (fx: sound of wood being touched)
Except for Lazysearch which seems to be hit or miss, at the moment it won't find anything....
I have two concerns about the memory upgrade though.
Why is there only 64Mb attached at the moment? Is there any restriction on the rest of the board that would stop more than 64Mb being used? (I'm not electronically minded)
If we upgrade now to add an extra 128Mb, could it possibly run out again with the next version of SS?? Would it be possible to replace the chip with a 'socket' of some sort?
Thanks for your feedback though, it is much appreciated. :)

The memory can be upgraded for sure, I am just trying to find out if it has to be matching or if we can put more in.
I doubt we could socket the memory.
Hi,
Thanks very much for the update. Like a few others I'm more concerned about the sleep issues than the lack of response via the web interface. I guess there's unlikely to be a simple fix to this though?
ultra238a
2006-09-25, 06:35
Jim,
The sleep issues will probably be down to the swap file being used. Extra memory will probably help this issue.
If we can find a solution to get the HDD to spin down in 6.5 with standard memory we will get it out to you guys.
Bonze,
The QNAP device was originally designed as a NAS device not a server. So just reading and writing to disks requires very little memory and 64MB should be more than enough. However, adding Slimserver to stream audio, host a SQL database and an advanced web interface puts a lot more requirements on the box.
Unlikely to be an electronic issue adding more memory although it is not socket based memory. In addition adding more memory to do more tasks may result in greater heat and the TS-101 doesn't have a fan to disipate heat.
The embedded OS may also have a memory limit, but as I know nothing about Linux I can't comment

Reading between the lines, are you saying that we all own a piece of hardware that cannot cope with the latest and forthcoming issues of SS software?

Don't jump to conclusions. Adding memory to the TS-101 can be done, the OS can handle extra memory and it shouldn't need any extra cooling.
Let me just get a couple of samples up and running and tested and then I will report back.
I don't think I have particularly let anybody down in the past and I have always provided a solution one way or another. I don't intend to start letting people down now on this product.
At the end of the day 6.3.1 works fine unless you have a Transporter. 6.5 runs fine if you don't want to use the web front end and don't want the HDD to spin down.
Lets keep it real for a couple of days!

Thanks for the explanation.
As memory is so cheap nowadays, I couldn't understand why they only fitted 64Mb. Although I suppose it would still keeps costs down for the final product :)
As I'm one of the 'luckier' ones with no side effects except for a slow web interface, I shall sit and wait for an answer :)
In response to Paul he has done a fantastic job in the very short period of time since SS 6.5 has been released. He has analysed our concerns on the "poor" performance of 6.5 hosted on TS-101 using the web interface. Paul and the guys have identified that the 64MB limit of the QNAP is the bottle neck and is also looking at solutions for us.
It would be just as easy to turn this on its head and ask the SS 6.5 developers why it requires a signifcant more amount of memory to run than 6.3.1.
At some point the QNAP will not be able to support the multitude of things that it starting to be asked to do. It was designed as a NAS device not a server. The specs of the box are there for all to see.
Personally I think Paul and PAV have and are doing an amazing job.
Seconded: Paul_B's comments on Paul's support for running SS on the TS-101.
An off the wall and probably impractical suggestion - would it be possible to use a USB flash drive for the TS-101's swap partition and thus let it's drive spin down? Are such devices too slow?
Cheers,
Rich

That's right, even with more memory at some point the QNAP won't be able to handle the Slimserver. As I said earlier, technology is always out of date sooner or later.
And I second it as well, Pauls identified the problem and come up with a probable solution in the space of a weekend. Try getting that service out of Sony or Microsoft!
I'd second it as well, except I'm probably fourth now. :) I trust Paul to come up with a solution if there is a practical one. As well as expanding the memory, I've already suggested that maybe SS could be tweaked to optionally reduce the swapfile size and it might not be practical (then again, it just might), but I like Rich's thinking with the USB stick idea.
Fifer,
Either that or off-load the web functionallity more to the client. From my own investigations the performance of the SQL database seems to be fine, its just the dynamic rendering of the web pages.

Just completed installation of the download tool from 6.5 to 6.3.1. All symptoms caused by upgrading to 6.5 persist. Stuttering playback on all Music files and Radio Streams. Please advise if there is anything else I can do to get my previously rock solid installation back to its pre 6.5 state.

Yay! the weather forecast is back :D
I downgraded SS on my TS-101 to 6.3.1 + Alien BBC 1.04 last night. Took awhile but it now spins down it's disk and plays FLAC and Alien streams without stuttering.
All in all it seems to be back to where it was prior to installing 6.5.
In addition, downgrading the SB's firmware caused a factory reset which prompted me to try WPA-PSK security again with my Netgear DG834PN. I'd never been able to get the my SB3 to connect using WPA before - firmware 55 fixed the issue.
If you do do the downgrade, I suggest you wait until SS has finished scanning before you trigger the firmware downgrade on your SQB. I didn't and it took much longer to transfer the firmware than usual.
Cheers,
Rich

Feeling brave I installed the QNAP firmware updates to bring the drive to 1.2.1
http://www.qnap.com.tw/download_detail.asp?pl=1&p_mn=TS-101&ct_name=Firmware
Then installed the all-in-one update
http://www.progressiveav.com/ts101_update/
followed by the Slim Server.
Then with a quick press of the remote control SB3 updated its firmware.
Then you wait. And wait. And wait. It takes ages for 6.5 to recatalogue all your music - I'm talking over 10 hours although I do have over 2000 albums.
I turn every feature of QNAP off so it really is just a base for the SB3 and it works well for that purpose. Searching was too slow before 6.3 which stopped me using it but after turning off all the non-slim server features and with that upgrade and with the excellent lazy search - finally I had realised my 'dream' of an MP3 player that looked good, was fast with a very large library, and didn't require a visible or noisy computer to be on.
This couldn't have been done without the very responsive guys at http://www.progressiveav.com/
My next upgrade will be when movies are supported to the calibre music is supported. So many all-in-one boxes forget to do one job well!

Does the hard disc in the QNAP go to sleep after uprading to 6.5?
Mine does. Upgraded to 6.5 with no problems. The new SS version has improved the 'pause' when manually forcing a move to next track in random play to about 3 seconds, down from 10 seconds.
Incidentally I have not upgraded to the latest Qnap firmware (If it ain't broke .... etc) but it seems everyone who has, and gone to 6.5, is having spin down problems.

Thats interesting. I upgraded to latest QNAP firmware on its release.Upgrade to SS6.5 proved disasterous last week.the qnap never stopped accessing so never slept.Music wouldn't play correctly.Other posts show this is a common problem. Paul is currently investigating. Not enough RAM in the QNAP seems to be prime suspect. Maybe its the latest QNAP firmware thats incompatible with SS6.5.
Hello,
i own a Synology diskstation 106 and i read in your thread something about the possibility to transfer the swap to a USB drive. I have tested it on the Diskstation. It seems to work with SS6.5. The NAS goes to standby mode with HDD sleep. It takes a little bit longer than for the SS 6.3.1, but at lest after 60 minutes the DS is in standby mode.
I have used a USB Card reader with a compact flash card.
So it should also work with your NAS.

Reading the last few days posts, there seems to be a few users who have got 6.5 working as it should with the TS101, inc hard disc spinning down. And others who have been hanging on for a solution to the TS101s lack of memory, which was initially tabled as a possible issue last week. It would be really helpfull if those who have got the upgrade to work succesfully could list out the process they used, along with their setup re wireless/wired, No of SBs, etc.
Hi all - I am new to this forum, having only installed my system at the weekend, but here are my findings:
I have a nap TS101 with slimserver plus 2 squeezeboxes, running over a wireless network with a D-link router.
The Qnap had Slimserver 6.2.? installed from new, and I was very nervous about upgrading after reading previous posts, but on Friday I set the system up, and decided to go for it.
I am happy to report that all went well, and I am now running 6.5 with the plugins including Alien BBC, and apart from a very slow server front end, which I haven't used really everything is working great.
The Qnap spins down no problem, and response at the squeezeboxes is great. I only have about 150 albums loaded on as yet in lossless format, but both boxes played all Saturday and Sunday without problems.
I hope this helps
mav
My TS-101 connects to my wireless router/modem via ethernet then the connection to my single SB is wireless. My upgrade process was simple; download update to Qnap, restart Qnap, wait for rescan to complete, allow SB to update firmware, play music.
As I said, everything works fine except for the slow web front-end. I've never been able to get the disc to spin down with any version of SS, but I've never really spent that much time trying and I assume it might be because I'm also using the Qnap as a wireless print server on my network.
My setup is two SB3's (one wired, one wireless) to a wired TS-101. I have 1615 Albums, 1170 Artists and 7548 songs in FLAC format. No plugins. I have not upgraded to the latest Qnap firmware but have upgraded to 6.5. Everything seems to work as expected and some responses (stepping forward in random play) are improved.
To give you all something to think about I did a comparison between a standard TS-101 500Gb, and a ReadyNAS NV 2Tb with 1Gb of RAM. Both have the same song library and both are running 6.5. I stopwatched some responses but am at a loss to explain the differences.
From the Home screen (both units were out of standby with no other processes running) I selected Browse Albums and then Browse Artists:
Qnap TS-101 - 34 seconds to display Albums
ReadyNAS NV - 45 seconds to display Albums
Qnap TS-101 - 12 seconds to display Artists
ReadyNAS NV - 15 seconds to display Artists
Qnap TS-101 - 3 seconds pause on 'forward track' random play
ReadyNAS NV - 5 seconds pause on 'forward track' random play
The Qnap has 300Gb of data, the NV 600Gb of which some 200Gb is FLAC songs. Rest is archive material on both.
So upgrading the memory of the Qnap may not be the panacea for better performance. Certainly the Qnap responds quicker to the remote than the NV.

How did you programme SS to transfer the swap to the USB drive. Or did it do it automatically?

Hi,
via telnet, i run the command mkswap /dev/sda1 (the usb device) (the device has to be unmounted).
Then i run the command swapon /dev/sda1 to enable the swapdevice. After that i had to unable the origin swap device (/dev/hda2 @ Synology diskstation). The system managed itself to use the usb drive, because there is no other swap device.

I had another go at installing 6.5 overnight. Everything went in perfectly. Flac streams played. HDD spin down worked. Then I installed the All in One Update, and the disc will now not sleep. On your previous post, you mentioned that ALIENBBC installed OK on your system. At what point of the upgrade progress did you install this plugin?

Did you install either the AlienBBC plugin for 6.5 (Which has now been removed from the upgrade page)or the All in one plugin upgrade. And if you did, at what stage of the upgrade process.
Thanks
Jerry

Upgrade processes as follows:
Set system up with original slimserver version 6.2.?
Checked everything working fine with 2 squeezeboxes etc
Downloaded Firefox and installed this (as the progressive website suggests)
Downloaded and installed "All in one update" onto Qnap
Downloaded and installed "Slimserver 6.5"
Checked that the system still worked (much crossing of fingers and touching of wood)
Once happy that all seemed to be in order (apart from very slow web interface), then downloaded and installed "All in one plugin update"
After final reboot of Qnap, saw that everything was ok, and that I had Alien BBC etc, and went to bed!!
On the Saturday, I used the system all day (my wife could not believe that I wasn't watching the golf on the TV). On the Sunday morning, I checked the Qnap, which was cold, and with no disc activity, then fired up the system again, and played tracks all day. We had a load of people over for lunch, and the system played a synchronised playlist from both squeezeboxes from 11.30 ish to 6.30 or so without a hitch.
I hope this helps - is this upgrade procedure the same as you followed?

Thanks for that. Yes,That's the procedure I followed. The only thing I can think is that, having had the QNAP for a few months, and installed the various upgrades of QNAP Firmware/Slimserver releases as they've been released. The updates are not installing cleanly. But thats speculation.

I took delivery of my TS-101 on September 7, with SS 6.2.2(?) installed and OS 1.0???.
I soon upgraded to the QNAP 1.2.1 release and then added the SS 'All-in-one'. From this point I installed SS 6.3.1 and the associated plug-in 'All-in-one' pack.
The TS-101 was working fine - reasonable performance on the web interface and sleeping, becoming cool, when idle.
When 6.5.0 was released, I installed that, quickly followed by the new plug-in 'All-in-one'. Since then, the web interface has been very 'laggy' and the disk never spins down.

Precisly the experience I've had. Reinstalling 6.3.1 from the upgrade site will fix it (eventually).Paul (Progressive)has posted his suspicions that its a memory related issue. Slow web front end is not a problem, just a pain. But the disc not spinning down is not acceptible. Several weeks ago, myself and many others spent weeks exchanging information in this forum, on how to get this feature of the QNAP to work, and its extremely frustrating to find that, for whatever reason, 6.5 has put us all back where we were.It would be really helpfull if someone from QNAP and/or Slimserver could give us a comment. If the uprade path for QNAPs has stopped with SS6.3.1.

Hi,
Right some of you have everything working nicely and some of you don't so here are some of my findings.
Thanks
Guys, I had quite a challange to upgrade from SS 6.3.1 > 6.5.0 on a QNAP TS-101 running firmware 2.0.0
According to the log-file SS was installed but waiting for hours nothing happened and the log file remained "installing SS....."
I then rolled back from firmware 2.0.0 > 1.2.1 and the installation of SS 6.5.0 with a Qnap on firmware on v1.2.1 was successfully closed.
In brief: You need to run a Qnap with firmware 1.2.1 to upgrade to SS 6.5.0
Rolling back from 2.0.0 > 1.2.1 is no prob at all. Just use the image iles on progressives server.

The memory can be upgraded for sure, I am just trying to find out if it has to be matching or if we can put more in.
I doubt we could socket the memory.
Hi Paul,
Looking through this thread i can't see if you managed to upgrade the memory or not. I'm looking to do the same so any time saved would be helpful
Thx
Phil
