View Full Version : Netgear XE104 85Mbps Wall-Plugged Ethernet Switch
Highly recommended. If you're having wireless problems eg streaming FLAC these devices will sort it. Installation takes about 10 seconds ! Passes all the network tests in SS 6.5
One device is plugged into a wall socket near the SqueezeBox and the supplied ethernet cable connects the two.
A second switch is plugged into a wall socket close to the music server and again an ethernet cable connects the two.
Data is passed through the electrical wiring in the house.
Been looking to get into this.
Is that the one that you are using, and if so how many do you get in the pack? From the look of it its one, so you have to buy two to make the thing work? If so it makes it around £110 which makes it a bit pricy (one of the things putting me off it tbh!).
Yes one/pack and you need at least two. I bought three as my kids machine is at the top of the house and sometimes struggles to talk to the Apple Airport.
If you don't need the extra ethernet ports then HomePlugs would do the same job (http://www.homeplugs.co.uk/acatalog/Solwise_HomePlugs.html) but I like the idea of having 3 spare ethernet ports behind the hifi/tv for future networking.
Yes, they are still a little pricey, although cheaper (in labor and hassle, but not in materials) than pulling cat5 cable through your walls. Netgear also makes a companion model (XE103) that has a single ethernet port, similar to the HomePlugs that konnexion mentions. Those are a little less expensive than the XE104s.
