Just want to verify before I proceed here
I just recieved my squeezebox v3 unit(very nice), and would like to add a NAS solution.
Looking to go with the Qnap ts-101; I live in the US.
Seems like there was a time where you needed to have the slimserver code pre-installed, but that is no longer the case.
So, if I
Get a TS-101 and a recommended hard drive (say, from Newegg)
Download the TS-101 firmware updates, slimserver code, and plugins from:
http://www.progressiveav.com/ts101_update/
Go thru proper install procedures.
Populate TS-101 with music
Configure slimserver on TS-101 with Live365 account info.
Point squeezebox at TS-101
then I should be good to go.
Yes?

I don't think a regular TS-101 knows to run Slimserver. I know Progressive was intending to release firmware that did support adding slimserver to a unit with a blank hard drive, but i've not seen anything to say this has happened yet.
The update software on the Progressive AV site is what it says, an update and it is intended for TS-101s which already have SlimServer installed only. It won't work on a bare one.

I am also trying to get Slimserver instralled on a "bare" Qnap TS-101. Is it definite that you cannot get slimserver to work if it were not already installed?
There is a firmware update on the progressive site but it is not clear if this software should allow installation of slimserver. Although I did update my firmware and still couldnt install SS. Perhaps that is some sort of clue :-).
It would be helpful to know if I am p*ssing around in the dark.

To my knowledge, the only way to get SS on your QNAP is to contact ProgressiveAV ( www.progressiveav.com) and they will install it for a fee (or at least they used to). The updates on the site will not work for your bare machine. There was talk of Progressive producing a do-it-yourself kit, but we have not heard anything about that recently. In fact, Paul, the QNAP project manager at ProgressiveAV has not been on the forum for a while which is worrying some of the QNAP crew.
It would certainly be possible to install SS on a 'bare' QNAP, but to do so from scratch is probably quite a bit of work vs. handing over a modest amount of cash to ProgressiveAV.
Paul has made a few non-QNAP related posts recently, but the reason for his silence on all things SS is unclear.

Hopefully it isn't because he wants to avoid saying anything which might influence his ability to clear current TS-101 stocks.
