View Full Version : what type of cable for a wired connection?
what type of ethernet cable do I need to purchase to try my SB2 wired? Seems to be severeal types and want to get the right type.
Assuming you're connecting to a hub or switch, you can use any cat5 or cat6 patch cable of the appropriate length (this covers 99% of what you'll see labelled as "network cables"). If you're connecting directly to a computer you'll need a crossover cable.

a have a linksys router. It's only use is for the squeezebox box, so what is better to go directly from computer or keep the router hooked up and go through that wired to the sqeezebox?

Keep the Squeezebox connected to the router. The router is what gives the Squeezebox access to the Internet, plus it's also probably responsible for giving the Squeezebox its network address.
What kind of cables were you looking at? Is the Squeezebox in the same room as the router, or are you looking at installing some permanent in-wall wiring to another room?
If you're in the same room, "patch cables" (though they may well have different names, like "Ethernet cable", or "Cat5 cable") are the cables you buy pre-terminated with RJ-45 plugs. You can also use a long patch cable to run into another room, but generally wouldn't use one through walls or conduit or if you staple the cable to a baseboard or somesuch. Like radish says, any Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 patch cord should do. Also, you don't need or want a shielded patch cable, if you come across one.
If you're installing permanent cabling, say running from your basement to your living room, you'd buy a different type of cable for the long run. And a couple of jacks, maybe wall plates, and patch cables for either end.
thanks. I'm having problems with my Sb2 freezing on the menus, so I want to try it wired. The computer's in the same room so It's should be an easy set up, just a temporary hook up to see of this will resolve the issues I'm having.

Go to a store and buy the cheapest ethernet cable they have that's long enough, then hook that up between the router and the SB.
