Can anyone recommend good quality and relatively compact powered speakers for use with SB?
No specific budget in mind but sound quality is primary interest
Thanks

I have been using a pair of Behringer powered monitors. Not the
smallest...in fact, they're about 12" x 10" x 16" The driver compliment
is 8" woofer driven by 150 watts RMS, 1" metal dome tweeter driven by
100 watts RMS. I bought them on E-Bay for $200. very flat response from
65 Hz to 20 kHz.
The only strangeness is that they're semi-pro gear with XLR type
inputs. I purchased a pair of RCA to XLR cables and turned the trim
level up to compensate for the level mismatch.

This comes up pretty often, so I'd recommend using the forum search facility to search for "active speakers" or "powered speakers" or the like. With no idea of your budget, preferences for size, and so on I wouldn't know where to start with suggestions.

...Harman Kardon Soundsticks II!

This is one of the most subjective areas I know of in terms of listener likes / dislikes - there are a zillion & one variables. The above may be a little outmoded now but measured in $ per quality db they're way ahead of most of the competition.
For me, the overwhelming dealmaker was the low volume bass capablilities proving that quality is better than quantity.

For the convenience (since you don't want an amp) and not bothering with a subwoofer, the new Creative GigaWorks T20 may be considered.
I have a pair of the Klipsch Pro Media 2.0 speakers and love them.

and here is a recent review of both the Klipsch and the Creative speakers:

At the low end of the range I can second the recommendation of the Klipsch ProMedia 2.0. That's what I use for the SB in my kitchen. Certainly not audiophile stuff, but quite good for the price. I got mine on eBay ("new, opened box") for $40 including shipping. For a few dollars more Klipsch also makes the ProMedia 2.1, which has a subwoofer.
