I posted this in the Linux/Unix forum. I thought some of you might be interested in a silent solution for the slimserver.
I setup a new Nano-ITX fanless system since I have my slimserver in the same room as my stereo. It's really wonderful.

Very cool!
Which VIA board did you use? Neither one of the Nano-ITX boards listed on their site indicate a fanless option.
In fact - is it a VIA board at all? Doesn't look like either of those boards, and they usually put a prominent VIA logo on it.

For those of us who run at the mention of Linux (well, I did work at Linux Journal, but that's another story)... could this set up work as a WinXP machine. More details would be appreciated. I've never built my own computer, but I have a friend who could help. Doesn't the external HD slow things down?

I bought the VIA Epia-N 8000E. It comes with an 800mhz processor embedded into the board. As for the board pictures, I took them with the heatsink mounted. The entire board is basically covered by a heatsink.
As for the question about Windows XP. I am sure it will work, but you might want to up the memory to more than 512mb. I have had Windows XP running on a 900mhz processor from VIA, but for this project the 800mhz processor feels really at home with the endlessly customizable GNU/Linux operating system.
I really am enjoying this setup. I don't hear a thing from the server now that I have set this up. It's funny. I didn't even know the machine was on until I turned on the monitor and saw that it was indeed running.

I wish VIA would indicate that the Epia-N is available in a fanless option.
BTW Windows XP runs quite well with 512 MB. That's my main PC, which also runs SlimServer.
