View Full Version : Can I use SB3 without the internet?
Last night I experienced severe dropouts and, essentially, I couldn't use my SB3. Tonight it works smoothly. As I understand things (which isn't very well), there are 2 possibilities:
(1) My wireless router signal strength experienced interruption; or
(2) My internet connection to Slimserver experienced interruption (Comcast cable modem).
I don't think my wireless network is the problem:
1.75Ghz Pentium 3 with 2G RAM hardwired to Linksys wireless WRT54GX2 router. Signal strength consistently 5 bars/excellent. Channel 1 and 11 both work but did not solve last night's dropouts.
So is it possible to install slimserver on my PC and run it "locally" to manage my music library and broadcast to SB3, or must I use the internet and connect to Slimserver? Anyone else have these problems?
Thx

Unless you're listening to Internet radio everything stays on your local network between SlimServer and the SB3.
Or were you maybe connected to SqueezeNetwork?
I'm not using the Squeezenetwork. My music is located on my computer hard drive; my computer is hardwired to my router; my router broadcasts wirelessly to SB3. But I thought Slimserver is a music management system that is located on a server on the internet that requires me to access it. So I thought the problem I was having with dropouts might be caused by difficulty accessing the slimserver network. Obviously I don't really understand how all this works - I'm having trouble describing it. What I'd like to do is manage my music with a software program that exists only on my computer, one which I don't need to access the internet to use (i.e., like iTunes or Winamp). Can I install the Slimserver software on my PC and use it without having to open internet explorer and go to the slimserver website?

When you click the icon in the 'tray' it doesn't go to Slim's site, it goes to your machine. (It should say "http://localhost:9000/" on the screen.
You don't need to be hooked up to the Internet for that.
It just happens to use a web browser to control things because it's an easy, portable interface (ie, you can see the same control page on Windows, MacOS and Unix), and offers other benefits like being able to control it from any machine on your network. You can hide the machine with slimserver on it in the basement and still get to the control page from your laptop in the bedroom.
But I thought Slimserver is a music management system that is located on a server on the internet that requires me to access it.
Nope.

That's exactly what you already have - Slimserver is running on your local machine (as is the website) - that's how you're able to play the music stored on it.
As for your dropouts, the likleyhood is it's a network issue, but it could also be something as simple as your PC being busy doing other stuff.
Slimserver should work fine without internet access. All you need is a working wireless or ethernet connection between your PC and the Squeezebox.
One exception that I know of - if you've selected a screensaver for your Squeezebox that requires Internet access, or that gets info from the Internet, and your internet connection goes down, well, that can crash your Squeezebox. I learned that last week, when we had a broadband outage for a few hours.
Thank you so much for the clarification (really). Okay so if Slimserver is running locally on my PC to manage my music and broadcast it to SB3, then I'll go back to troubleshooting my router configuration. My PC was definitely not engaged in any other activity during the dropouts. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Maybe switch channels on the wireless connection - your neighbors may be interfering.
