Without going into the whys and wherefores of Palms and PocketPCs, what type of handheld is best to use for controlling Squeezebox? Or is it just any that will run a web browser and has wifi? Will they work with slimserver installed on a linkstation?

Any device with wifi and a web browser will do albeit there seems to be (almost) mutual agreement that the Nokia 770 is the best device to control your squeezeboxen wirelessly.
The Nokia has a much higher resulution than most PDAs and there is even a skin in the upcoming 6.5 release designed specifically for the Nokia. I own a Nokia myself and am very happy with its performance so far.
I do not own a linkstation or similar device but from what I've read on this forum I would expect the web interface to be very slow and sluggish.

The latest hype is the Nokia 770 together with the Nokia770 skin.

You're right in that you only need a decent web browser. I don't know too
much about browsers available on the Palm. PocketIE seems to be working
fine (the Handheld skin is optimised for low spec browsers). I'm using
Opera on the Zaurus which is of course so much better :-)

And there are "fat" clients available for the PocketPCs that don't use the
web interface: a commercial product (TelCanto), and SlimRemote, a project
I just started recently and that should be open source soon
(http://www.herger.net/slim/detail.php?nr=912). I still hope the
programming language I'm using will be ported to the Nokia 770...

My Sony CLIE (Palm OS) works fine with its built-in browser (Netfront). Response times are very quick on my Windows system.
