I've using the Roku Soundbridge successfully for some time now, but have been reading some great reviews about the new Squeezebox 3 in terms of sound quality. I have a couple of questions though:

Can the SB be served directly by iTunes or Twonkyvision, or does it have to have Slimserver running? (I understand that the two software servers I use don't support all the formats the SB is capable of playing).

Secondly, does the SB play all formats without gaps? The Roku knits together MP3/AAC to be effectively gapless but I've come across other server/client combos that introduce small gaps (which drive me up the wall!)

Anyone else switched from Roku to Squeezebox that can give me a review of comparative performance?

Thanks

Pat

Hi

Your Squeezebox would need to be driven by a Slimserver running somewhere, though there are a variety of integrations available with iTunes (see the iTunes page in the Wiki).

There have been lots of discussions here about gapless - on the whole the answer is "yes", though this is controversial with some file types (eg MP3) and I think there may be an open bug report in this area. Works for me, though.

I can't give you the Roku/SB comparison, though, as I never owned the other one... I did look when first researching, a year ago, but in the end the SB was an easy choice (and never regretted).

There are several discussion threads on the Roku here - all of them entirely unbiased, of course! Try this one as a sample: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=17486
