View Full Version : Firmware download problems

Yesterday, My wireless SB3 greeted me with the upgrade/download new firmware message.

As instructed, I pressed the brightness button on the remote...and the download/install began.... however, at the conclusion of the process, instead of starting up normally, I was sent back to the upgrade/download screen again...

I did the process a couple of times...then tossed in the towel and called tech support at Slim Devices. They solved the problem by having me unplug the power supply and then press the "1" button on the remote as I plugged the power supply back in the SB3.

Interestingly, the SB3 firmware "upgrade" actually rolled back from version 29 BETA (installed at the factory) to version 28.

Anyone else get this mysterious upgrade???

Cheers

The firmware is contained and dictated by what
version of SlimServer you're running.

It most likely did not have version 29 from the
factory as it's still beta. FW 29 is included
with the nightly 6.2.2 releases.

If you download 6.2.1, the stable release, through
the normal channel, it contains firmware 28 and
will load it on your Squeezebox at the first
opportunity.

So, what version of SlimServer were you running?
Did you change it?

Looks like it got a bit confused going back and
forth. But the good thing is I haven't seen
anyone "brick it" like what's possible with a router.

Hi Mark,

I am running - and have been running - Slimserver version 6.2.1 build 5194 - for Windows XP since I first got my Squeezebox 3 about a month ago.

I have not downloaded or installed version 6.2.2

And now - to further add to the mystery - just had a call from my son who also has the SB3 wireless and he had the same problem I had. Fortunately I could tell him about the "press button 1 on the remote" solution and get him back up and running.

So, are we the only two owners of the SB3 wireless (running windows XP) that has experienced this anomaly in the last 2 days??

And - next question - if the SB3 downloads software updates via the internet - and since there is no way to NOT install the update - what happens if the update patch is hacked ??? What is the security and verification for these patches????

Food for thought, anyone?

Did you connect to SqueezeNetwork? Firmware can also
be pushed through that way as well.

Very strange.

Now in regards to hacking:

1. Hacking SlimServer: pointless. It's open source.
What would be the point? Someone would notice it
right away and fixing it would be easy.

2. Firmware: this is closed and very hard to work
with. There are only a very few people at Slim who
can modify it. It's machine-level code compiled for a
RISC processor. This isn't the sort of stuff script
kiddies can understand or get into.

I have no doubt that Slim maintains network security
on the same level as other device manufacturers
offering downloads. It's as safe as any of them, I
guess.

Slim could possibly start publishing MD5 checksums to
verify that the download is the same as at the source.
