I ripped this CD the other night (EAC to flac), and some of the lows, particularly on the title track, are driving my sub crazy. That track is almost unlistenable except at very low levels. This is some kind of "enhanced" CD. Could that be creating ripping problems?

Just listened to it.

Sounds like it uses a sample recorded from vinyl with a lot of LF rumble.

OK for me - used dbpoweramp to rip to FLAC...

as a side note, anyone know how to rip the hidden track on this album?

(not an easy track to find on there either ;) )

(not an easy track to find on there either ;) )I think you would have to get a complete image of the disk and cut just that part out of it. I couldn't find any way to do it via normal routes. I decided it wasn't worth the effort.

For those who don't know, the hidden track is in the first track's lead-in in negative time. The only way to play the hidden track is to rewind (scan, not skip back) from the beginning of the first track. I don't think it's on the US release.

Since I've been taking full-disk images + cue sheets as backups, I've
found a couple discs with these pre-gap hidden tracks where I hadn't
known they were there. EAC will show that the disc index is kind of
funny, so it's pretty easy to spot them.

The easiest way I've found to rip them to individual tracks is to
manually edit the cue sheet. The first index for the first song will
be at like 04:51:02 or whatever, depending on how long the hidden
track is. So I bump ahead all of the song numbers on the cue sheet by
one so TRACK 01 AUDIO becomes TRACK 02 AUDIO, etc. Then I add in a
new track one with an INDEX 01 of 00:00:00. Open that cue in
foobar2000 and I'll be able to see and play all the tracks including
the hidden one and convert each track individually.

This is, I realize, still a lot of effort and typing, but for me it's
a lot simpler than using a wave editor to yank the audio out or
something. I don't know of any rippers that will rip these pre-gap
tracks correctly, since they all seem to respect the CD's TOC as far
as when Track 1 starts.

I've just listened to the White Ladder title track on my SB2 (also FLAC ripped with EAC), and I agree that the bass is definitely overblown. I even recalibrated my system with a sound meter and tried again, with identical results.

My reference "bass heavy" track is Reverence by Faithless - only decent subs can pump out the bass on this track without losing control!

My Paradigm Servo 15 sub handles Reverence with no problems, but White Ladder just sounds flabby and overblown. I think the fault probably lies with the recording, or maybe my sub isn't as good as I thought it was??

Actually, I think a couple of tracks before the title track are even worse. I like the CD, but I may have to eliminate a couple of tracks from my playlist. Some CD's (Annie Lennox's "Bare" is one) just have too much bass. I wish there were a way to adjust LF levels for certain CD's.

Ah, so *that's* what it is ! I ripped this album using EAC and the hidden track is joined together with track 1. I assumed I'd made a blunder with the ripping somehow !

The bass is o.k. on my system. I would say the Gorillaz "Demon Days" album puts out way more bass. If anything, there appears to be an annoying high frequency crackling sound on "White Ladder". I've never heard it before, but I did just get a new DAC and anti-cables. Maybe that's a good sign!
