View Full Version : Suggestion for future SlimServer

With all the debate on about SlimServer 6.2, I'm
hesitant to suggest this, but once those bugs get
squashed it might be a good development.

For several years now, Intel has had multithreaded
processors (hyperthreading). With dual-core this
has extended even further, and AMD has dual cores
as well.

Not many programs took advantage of
Hyperthreading. I don't know how dual-core works,
but I'm sure programs aren't taking full advantage
of having separate processors either.

Wouldn't it be advantageous if SlimServer could
use these technologies to their full extent? Have
rescans reserved for one thread/processor while
the other is dedicated to keeping the server
running and other user tasks?

This might unfortunately require a major rewrite
though, and it would have to be done differently
for single core/no hyperthreading, single
core/hyperthreading, dual core/no hyperthreading
and dual core/hyperthreading.

Still, should I put in a feature request for it,
or will it be more trouble than it's worth?

Thanks.

This is already on the 7.* roadmap.
