Import method in Itunes for best possible sound quality?

I'd never had a reason to rip CDs to my hard drive before - that is, until I purchased a Squeezebox. I experimented yesterday by ripping a CD to my hard drive in the Apple AIFF format. The sound quality was spectacular, compared to standard MP3s.


But I can't seem to locate any good info at Apple's website about the very best method of copying a CD to one's hard drive. Apple's help seems geared toward users of mid-fi Ipods.

Assuming that space/file size is not a consideration, what is the very best setting, in terms of sonic fidelity, to use in Itunes for importing CDs for playback on the Squeezebox. Thanks in advance.

I use Apple Lossless, works extremely well and you get some compression.

Though I don't understand why they had to create apple lossless when there are so many lossless compression alternatives. My guess is they want to tie you to itunes. Here is a nice write up on lossless compression http://mp3.radified.com/lossless.htm

I don't use apple lossless because it only works in windows and I prefer linux. Honestly, storage space is so cheap I decided not to fuck around and just bought a healthy NAS and ripped big ol' uncompressed wav files using Exact Audio Copy http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/

can you specify what storage you recommend for say...700-1000 CDs in either FLAC lossless or WAV?

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking, I can't see the start of
this thread. The sound quality between FLAC and wav/PCM should be
identical. Storage for 700 CDs in Flac takes about 280GB for me,
YMMV.

I'd get a couple of 300GB disks and have backup.
