View Full Version : Multiple genre levels (sub-genres)?
Hi,
I'm thinking about purchasing an SB2, but need some more information.
I listen to a variety of different music and have +100 genres in my current FLAC library. Ideally my front-end could show these genres by user defined levels, like e.g. Netjuke allows you to. Sometimes I like to listen 'Rock', but sometimes I'd like to narrow it down to 'Hard Rock' or 'AOR'.
Here's what I mean in a tree form:
Rock
- Hard-Rock
- Punk
- Pop-Rock
- Prog Rock
- etc etc
Dance
- Trance
- Eurobeat
- Disco
- etc etc
Classical
- Baroque
- Modern
- Romantic
- etc etc
Is this possible to configure in Slimserver currently?

No.
Slim Devices seems intent on steering people away from the idea that SlimServer is intended to be a music manager. And in it's current form, it certainly isn't not much of one. Maybe it'll happen in the future in version 9 or version 12 if there's enough call for it, but right now Slim Server is fairly primitive.

At the moment, no. The code is flexible enough to do this kind of thing, but it
would require a patch (which is always welcomed from anyone, despite what some
might say).

How are you tagging your music to support sub-genres?
How are you tagging your music to support sub-genres?
I tag files with just sub-genres directly, i.e. following above example 'Prog Rock', 'Hard Rock', 'AOR' and maybe just 'Rock'. The tagging is kept simple, I'd just want to have it in the UI that I can group genres X, Y and Z to be referenced through A.

I do a similar thing. I have ; set as my delimeter character in SlimServer and have tagged genres with things like "Classical;Classical/Modern", "Classical;Classical/Baroque" etc. This way all the tracks show up under Classical, but also appear separately under Classical/Baroque, Classical/Modern etc. You don't get the hierarchy in the menu, so you can't "drill down", but I find it acceptable.

Sort of. Are you adding multiple genre tags per song? (i.e. is a
song both "Rock" and "Hard-Rock")
This we support and is how I tag many of my songs.
Or are you looking to configure SlimServer to know that "Hard-Rock"
is a kind of "Rock"?
This we don't support yet. It would require that you create a
hierarchy of Genres and SlimServer would need to know about that
hierarchy. (Is there some kind of standard hierarchy you are using?
I don't know of one.)
On the other hand, you can organize your music folder with a
hierarchy and browse that way, but it's a bit cumbersome but you can
browse all the way down to the file title that way.
That's neat. How exactly is it done?
Via the web server under Server Settings->Behavior and set your delimiter character(s) in the Multiple Items In Tags field.

It would be better to use more than one GENRE tag since the 6.2 betas of SlimServer now support multiple GENRE tags in FLAC and other Vorbis commented files. That's a much cleaner approach and may avoid having to retag the genres in the future. Of course there's no hierarchy suggested by having multiple tags, but then there's not one implied by a delimited list either.
The only way I can see to impose a hierarchy is to have a separate data structure somewhere that says genre 'A' is a child of genre 'B', genre 'C' is a child of genre 'A', 'D' is child of 'B', etc.
Or, come up with another off-the-wall tagging scheme that's unique to SlimServer.

I don't currently use several tags per FLAC file. I did that earlier, but noticed that different players got confused by this.
What I was hoping for was to be able to define my own genre structure, i.e. as a separate definition. I don't believe that there could be a (useful) universal definition.
In Netjuke (www-jukebox, now legacy at www.jinzora.com) there is this possibility. There one can take a genre and define it as a child or sub-genre of another genre.
Using multiple tags for one file serves another purpose, IMHO. That's also neat, but for me with over 100 genres choosing genre from an initially smaller list would be beneficial.
