I want to be able to rip a CD into both flac and mp3 at once (I need the mp3 for my iPod). I seem to remember someone adding a post that gave a link to a program / plugin for EAC that could do this? I can't find it - does anyone have any suggestions?

Also.....as I will be storing flac and mp3's for the same album has anyone got any suggestions on how to best go about organising this on the HD for ease of use + so that you don't end up always playing the mp3 rather than flac version through the SB2?

The tool you want is called Mareo and lives at http://mareo.monkeydev.org/. In terms of organising your files, stick all your mp3s under one folder, and all your flacs under another. Tell slimserver about the flac folder but not the mp3 folder (i.e. make sure there are no links to the mp3 folder in the flac folder). Under the flac and mp3 folders you can create subfolders for artist, album etc to your hearts content.

Many thanks! I'll check it out!

Use MAREO, but I HIGHLY recommend using EAC's queueing ability. I find MP3 encoding takes (I'm guessing here) at least 10 times as long as FLAC encoding and it slows down the ripping process pretty badly. Hit Ctrl-Q and check "Make all compression tasks sleep". Later, maybe before you go to work or to bed, uncheck the setting and EAC will go to work encoding your ripped tracks using MAREO or whatever other external program you've chosen. The only real caveat is that you'll need sufficient disk space to temporarily store the uncompressed WAV files on your disk.

Here's my current disk organization:

D:\Music
- flac
- mp3
- Slim Playlists

MP3s will eventually have to move, though, as I get more of my collection ripped. Eventually all of my FLAC files won't fit onto a single drive, so I'll have to experiment with shortcuts or else flatten the directory space across multiple drives, probably using a RAID 5 or JBOD array.

I point SlimServer's music directory at D:\Music\flac\, and don't bother with the mp3s. The downside to this is if you have mp3s that you didn't rip and encode yourself, so you don't have FLAC copies, then SlimServer can't play them. I can live with that.
