View Full Version : Windows FLAC tagger for multidisc albums?

Does anyone know of a Windows tagging tool that can tag FLAC files with the SlimServer-expected tags of DISC (disc #) and DISCC (total # of discs in set)?

I've been using Mp3Tag for a while, and although it's nice I don't see how to create these custom vorbis tags.

Tag&Rename at www.softpointer.com supports the DISCNUMBER (Disc#) tag, this is apparently, a "Non-official, though generally accepted/used tag" . I use it all the time. I can't see DISCC (No. of discs) in the options though.

You could use metaflac (although it is command line only) or foobar 2000

My understanding is that SlimServer only understands the tag named DISC. In searching for how to set up multidisk sets for SlimServer think I may have came across an enhancement request for support of DISCNUMBER in SlimServer. Has it been added to SlimServer yet?

I guess SlimServer must recognise the DISCNUMBER tag since it shows (Disc 1) etc. after the title for my multi disc albums.

DISCC is not needed, it's used internally to store the number of discs
but slimserver can figure that out.

foobar2000 (http://www.foobar2000.org/) should fulfill all your tagging needs.

slimserver translates DISCNUMBER in flac files as equivalent to the
id3 DISC tag. There's been some discussion of translating DISCTOTAL
to DISCC, but as someone pointed out, this is mostly syntactic sugar
and doesn't actually affect the servers behaviour, so it hasn't been a
real priority.
I suspect that using DISC as a tag will work as well, not by design so
much as a side effect of how the code is written. But at the very
least, DISCNUMBER will work and be recognised by the slimserver.

So we're saying DISCC/DISCTOTAL in FLAC files is completely ignored by SlimServer? What happens if you have only part of a multidisc set, say three out of a four disc set - wouldn't you still want to know that there are four total discs?

I found out that Mp3Tag can do user-defined fields, so I can continue using it. Just select a file or files, then press Alt-T. It opens a dialog for viewing, adding, editing all tags.

Since I'm ripping my collection to both mp3 and FLAC, let me see if I have the tag names straight:

FLAC
--------
disc number: DISCNUMBER
disc total: DISCTOTAL

MP3
--------
disc number: DISC
disc total: DISCC

For purposes of tracking your collection, that's an important thing to
know. As far as slimserver goes, I don't know that it actually uses
this information anywhere. I think it just either joins them all (in
order) into one big album, or alternately sticks "disc X" into the
album name, depending on how you have your settings.
Let me know if I'm missing something.

That looks right to me.

FLAC works fine with DISC, and not only in slimserver. I think
foobar2000 would have translated the tag name otherwise. Does the
Vorbis comment spec say DISCNUMBER is authoritative?

No, nothing official. See the links posted by user '12345' in the following HydrogenAudio thread:
